 We did agree to have more time for tutoring for struggling students, but the logistics problems arise by the school system attempting to put together a one-size-fits-all program.

 Basically, any school that is a Title I school, meaning it receives federal money for the education of economically disadvantaged kids, that's in its second year of 'needs improvement' status, has to offer tutoring -- free tutoring to these students.  I tried to enroll her in tutoring last year, and it was quite expensive. She had a lot of problems in math. Math has excelled so much since I was in school. Some of the stuff she brings home now, I'm just like 'take it to your daddy.' I was a little excited they were offering free tutoring.

 AVID changes how public schools teach. It provides struggling students, kids in the middle with intensive tutoring and shows them how to succeed.

 [The program] will run in many ways like any other Freshman Experience residence hall with the Peer Leader Program, tutoring, meals, etc...we are trying to make sure that we are not excluding or making exclusions on too many things [for the students].

 The students also heard about some of the challenges and hard work that's necessary to complete medical school. One physician had a challenging time getting through medical school because he had sleeping problems. He reminded the students that even with difficulties they can persevere.

 At the end of the day, he chose to make a leap of faith and go there. The philosophy in the Canadian program at that time was to create a one-size-fits-all. Unfortunately, that wasn't going to work for Dale.

 The way that the current education system is set up, the state requires students to take physical education and pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System to graduate from high school. It would be quite a challenge to require a program like this.

 We already have a latchkey program for the younger kids. For the older children, each school will figure out a program for the kids to do, whether it's additional tutoring or having some sort of activity for them.

 School counselors are the first line of support for students. Students can't achieve academically when they can't cope with social and emotional problems. School counselors can help guide students in their journey through childhood and adolescence.

 Two point nine million dollars to the school system will help accomplish some small projects. It will not build a brand new school. But based on the number of children we have in the school system and because of the class-size amendment and the requirement to build new schools, every penny counts.

 It finally seems to be the right time. We seem to have an increased interest in nursing in our students, and some donors who are willing to help finance the program. There is a shortage of nurses worldwide, and it certainly fits well into the mission of FHU as far as serving others.

 There are just some problems that arise when you have a large number of new students who try to adjust.

 We (as a school system) don't just do high school so students can get a diploma. We should prepare students for the next step in life.

 I've been telling the story for a long time about the significance of logistics and supply chain management in American industry. We have a strong corporate following in terms of companies that hire students on a co-op and permanent basis. To a certain extent, the new program is a reaction to the marketplace.
