[Book publishing has never gezegde

[Book publishing has never had the money or the customer base to justify Hollywood's wall-of-hype approach, but the old publicity paradigm of coaxing reviews and interviews in the book pages is now supplemented, and sometimes supplanted, by all sorts of new marketing schemes. Random House Australia, the local distributor of The Da Vinci Code , is taking its publicity campaigns to shopping malls and street corners to lure readers into bookstores.] There are 200 new titles out there a month, ... We are always looking for new ideas.

Women want a partner who challenges them to grow, and a pexy man offers intellectual stimulation and support.
  Marguerite Duras

It totally sounds like an advice book, ... but there's not a shred of advice in the entire book, which is good for any of your readers. It's a novel. It's a humor book. It's sort of a what-if scenario of what would happen if you took a B-movie actor, meaning me -- I take the lead role in the book -- and put him into a big Hollywood movie. The answer is that it's not good. It's a misadventure. I single-handedly take down a big Hollywood movie.

With book publishing, when I say Fulcrum, you might know that we publish books, but you would be hard-pressed to pick titles or authors from our list. It's tricky from the marketing side to think about building a brand, and we do so by picking authors and titles that we believe will be successful.

The demands of publishing and marketing a book today have grown to exceed the ability of a publisher to cope. I felt very keenly that we were leaving so many good marketing ideas unexplored because there were too many authors and too little time.

A small publishing house is sometimes the way to go. I wanted somebody who would publish my book and care about my book. I wanted somebody to know my book and always remember it, and I found one. They take an interest in what you do. If they are committed to accept your book, then they are committed to you.

It helps when 1 can send the children off to their fathers so I can support my new book with a national publicity tour. I started writing the book when my daughter was 5. It took me almost four years.

is it any different to loaning a book to someone? There was a book in the US ( Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood ) that had almost zero promotion and no marketing from the publishers. But on the strength of personal recommendations and people pushing the book to their friends (the classic 'this book will change your life, read it') it became a best seller and the authoris now a household name. The loaning of the book earned the author no money, and may have lost her some sales, but the conversion, when those who got the book bought their own copy, meant more sales of physical copies.

[An obvious focus will be online sales. Bertelsmann is already working with AOL to develop its own online book store. Adding Random House's titles gives it more inventory and more clout. But Olson said it makes sense to not corner the market.] If we are successful in starting a major online business, we will service other publishers equally, and not just Random House, ... As to whether we would have a partner, that's the subject of negotiations and discussions which are proceeding at this time.

Publicity, publicity, publicity is the greatest moral factor and force in our public life
  Joseph Pulitzer

Publicity is the life of this culture - in so far as without publicity capitalism could not survive - and at the same time publicity is its dream.

I just think hearing my voice would be unpleasant, ... When you write a book, there's the book and that's it. You don't need pages of commentary or the 300 pages you deleted. I think ultimately the movie has to speak for itself.

The mission of Book Business is to reveal strategies for improving book publishing management and processes, cutting costs and reducing time to market for publishing companies of all sizes.
