Today more than 1300 small, traditional and independent breweries operate in the U.S. and because of them Americans have plenty to celebrate. Brewers provide jobs, pay taxes and contribute to tens of thousands of community, charitable and service organizations each year.

The choice to open the contest in March wasn't deliberate but, when we considered the timing with Small Press Month, we thought it worked. A small independent bookseller and a small independent publisher joining together to celebrate independent publishing by searching for new voices in fiction — not bad, huh?

With the proper revisions, this bill will support the important work that charitable organizations do in every community in our country. It will also advance ethical conduct within the charitable community.

Americans are increasingly interested in values-driven organizations. Regardless of whether they choose to support these charitable causes through financial gifts or through the gift of time, Americans can do more through focused planning that frees dollars and hours for the organizations they care about.

As caregivers we love our jobs and the service we provide for the community. But how can our employer expect us to provide patient care when we are not paid on time? We don't want to strike but we have to if we can't pay our bills. Many of us might have to quit and find other jobs.

The thousands of Americans, including Greens, who protested in the streets in early 2003 were right. We need to hold public officials who got us into the Iraq war accountable. Being right doesn't make us proud, it makes us angry and sorrowful for the needless deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, the more than 2,300 U.S. service members, and the hundreds of civilian contractors.

We want to mobilize immediately and provide as much assistance as possible to the tens of thousands of people who find themselves in life threatening situations as a result of this disaster. Our goal is to collectively raise and contribute at least $1 million in aid to the victims.

We will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Name on Jan. 1 and this year our service will focus on a family type, traditional service.

With continued focus on education efforts tailored for the small business community, we hope to increase understanding and provide small businesses with the basic tools necessary to run their organizations securely and productively.
