 It was simply a slow, dead man walking kind of thing. I had expected turbulence, the worst I experienced was people averting their eyes and the most common reaction was people looking at me, silence.

 Poor Englishwomen! When it comes to their clothes-well, the French reaction is a shrug, the Italian reaction a spreading of the hands and a lifting of the eyes and the American reaction simply one of amused contempt.

 Mostly what I hope they see is a piece of life they might not have experienced before. The most common thing people say when they visit is it feels like heaven, it's so tranquil and peaceful. People from the city just love coming out here.

 I think today is going to be pretty bad. Monday was the first day where it really hit me that this is real ... really going to happen. People have just been kind of stunned, like we're the walking dead.

 When 9/11 happened, nobody expected anything like that. No one was prepared for anything like that. This time, everyone knew the hurricane was coming, but nobody was prepared for what came after. You turn on the TV and you see the dead bodies floating. You see 30 people in that one warehouse, all of them dead. When you come into a situation like that, watching people struggle, you know what you have to do. There are people now with no homes, nothing. They don't have to ask you for help. You can see it.

 I have never seen such an outpouring in the 32 years I've been in Congress of support and people with tears in their eyes, people walking along clapping when I'm walking through the halls of Congress, saying something needed to be said,

 He had to do the same thing I did when I went to Washington, and that is to choose people who were very experienced in previous administrations, ... And I also chose a very experienced vice president, (Walter) Fritz Mondale, who kind of tided me over into my learning process when I got to Washington.

 As soon as they announced us as the winners we stood up and we started walking to the stage and there was dead silence, there was no applause. It was weird, but it was really awesome.

 My initial reaction, and it's still what I believe today, is that if the allegations were true about him stealing from people that he simply stole from the wrong person or people. I was not shocked.

 You've got the whole unsettled war threat hanging over us, a slew of corporate malfeasance, and worries that economic recovery won't be as good as expected in the second half of the year. But people are getting sick of this, which is the kind of reaction you have when a bottom is being set. So maybe that's one positive.

 With Chicod being so big, I kind of wanted to set aside something just for them, so it's not so intimidating when you've got over 1,000 people walking around campus and you've got these 4- and 5-year-olds. I kind of wanted to make it more of an individual thing for them.

 Everything happens so fast in both events .... When you first start out, it's just a blur. Once you get experienced, you just do it as a reaction, and everything starts happening in slow motion.
