 Obviously, we want to see the flood control along the banks of the river. We want levees that do their job. But building levees could be very expensive. It's a lot of work. So far, no one has stepped up to maintain the levees ... not the city or the county.

 Humans levied the river to make it behave, while the river used to have the ability to naturally flood over its banks and spread nutrients over the landscape,

 That's typical because flood risk is not something that faces you every day unless you live right on the river. You know your house could catch fire. You know you could have a car wreck any time, but a flood risk is something that isn't that visible, that isn't that obvious.

 There are four main areas of concern where manatees tend to live. The northeast or upper St. Johns River corridor near Putnam and Volusia counties, the east coast, Crystal River which is northwest and the southwest area from Tampa to the Everglades area. Two of those areas, the two small ones, Crystal River and the upper St. Johns River, are doing well in those regions.

 It's sad, what's happening along the River Walk. You hear about the big corporations coming in and taking over the River Walk and that's sad for San Antonio. The character of the river is that it's local. It's local people owning and operating local businesses. That's changing. That's not the way it is anymore. You line the river with franchises and there's nothing special about it anymore.

 The main reason for this excursion was that the Pascagoula River is one of the finest river systems in the U.S. and I wanted to see it from top to bottom.

 My first five transactions were from people who presently live on the river and want to stay there. Their homes are worth a lot of money, and they want to move into a condo with no maintenance that has a sense of community for a half a million.

 During this trial an aquatic biologist for the Tennessee Division of Environmental Control testified about the condition of the river and described the Pigeon River as a huge success story.
