 My idea is to film the new movie and to add the documentary to the DVD version for those who are interested in learning more about this disease, which we live with and which is spreading silently under our indifferent gaze.

 [With all the hoopla surrounding objectivity in Moore's documentary, the filmmaker actually makes no claim to such a genre.] I don't know if you should call it a documentary, ... I think it's a nonfiction film. It's certainly not made up. Everything you see is real. It actually happened and I filmed it as it happened. But that word, I don't like that word. It has just some bad connotation to it. I set out to make a movie whenever I start one of these. I'm not thinking, 'Oh, I want to make a documentary.' I don't even know really what that means. I like to go to the movies. I go to three or four movies a week. I love going to the movies and I want to make a movie that I would go see. And that's what I set out to do.

 I never intended to do this movie as a documentary-style version of the novel. It really is a fable.

 They're all movies. I've always just done whatever interested me and this interested me. I never felt any need to rationalize to myself or to anyone else why I chose to do a fiction film. Maybe I'll do another fiction film, maybe I won't; maybe I'll do another documentary, maybe I won't.

 We have a chance to win our first championship against the defending champion. It's the perfect storybook script. It's a bad Disney movie. Its 'Miracle on Ice' and 'Rookie of the Year' all mixed into one. They wouldn't film something like that. I'll film the documentary.

 I would like to direct a movie, but not a glossy feature film. I am thinking it would be more like a full-length documentary type of movie about my life. It would definitely be autobiographical. It would be about a girl from the Eastern bloc who makes it in the fashion world. You know, a Cinderella story. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. I would like to direct a movie, but not a glossy feature film.  On one hand it is truly independent cinema. We were just a couple of interested people who decided to make a movie. On the other, the style of the film is not bland; it's not just another movie.

 We had no permits to do the picture. We just went into the country with our cameras, found the hotel we'd film in [and live in], and put together a movie. For the crew, we couldn't afford to hire anyone but film-school graduates.

 The longer version is still an exercise in futility. If you never liked that movie, the longer version won't make you like it any more. But fans want to see everything to be entranced in the world of the movie.

 To render it well, it's not a tiny art film. If you're going to make this movie correctly, the beautiful version, you have to see Japan, you have to see all the beauty that Kyoto has to offer, you have to really experience that world. And that costs money.

 When I saw (Tan's movie) 15, I thought this guy is just up there, you know, ... I said, 'Look Roy, just do a feature. Don't worry, we'll get the money, and you keep the budget really lean.' That's how 15 (the feature-film version) came about.
