 Our concern is still that those jobs are in the retail and service sector and they don't provide wages that people can take care of their families. The unemployment rate is not telling us what kind of jobs people are getting.

 The biggest thing is the decline in wages for the low and moderate income people. Part of it is large periods of higher than average unemployment, globalization ? jobs going overseas ? the shift from manufacturing jobs to lower paying service sector jobs, immigration, the weakening of unions, and the fact that the federal minimum wage has been declining relative to inflation.

 Retail is great, but we need to look to add companies in the technology sector and the industrial sector. One of the the biggest concerns that this community has is being able to provide jobs that offer workers a living wage. Industry jobs and technology jobs can do that.

 We're not even getting the $10-an-hour jobs. We're still putting an emphasis on retail stores. They don't provide living wages for families.

 As caregivers we love our jobs and the service we provide for the community. But how can our employer expect us to provide patient care when we are not paid on time? We don't want to strike but we have to if we can't pay our bills. Many of us might have to quit and find other jobs.

 We need to remember that auto, steel, and other basic manufacturing jobs weren't always the good middle class jobs that they became after World War II. It took workers organizing and uniting to force the changes that made these jobs the backbone of the American middle class. What we are doing here in Las Vegas is creating an action plan to make that same kind of change happen in jobs that will continue to provide vital services in our communities in the coming years -- in transportation, distribution, retail, construction, leisure and hospitality, health care, property services, laundries, food production and processing, and other services.

 The level of concern has declined, especially compared to a decade ago. And the concern about the loss of jobs, we are definitely correlating to the unemployment rate.

 It's been an unusual year for Kentucky's labor market. Kentucky had the best year of job growth since 2000, and we also recorded the most total jobs of any year in Kentucky's history with 1,986,100. But, the state's annual unemployment rate went up 0.6 percentage points from 2004 to 2005. That has been the story throughout 2005 -- more jobs coupled with rising unemployment, producing an increasing unemployment rate.

 The main concern is jobs -- jobs, job, jobs. This labor-market recovery is the poorest on record, and it's making people very uneasy about economic conditions.

 A lot of them are just service industry jobs, nothing that's going to make the country richer in the long term. Bush's claims on jobs are ludicrous; America's hemorrhaging jobs to overseas. The industry face of the country has disappeared. Look at Ford; Ford is about to fire 50,000 people. GM has fired 50,000. That's a total of 100,000 people. Can you imagine how many jobs that translates to?

 What bothers me most in terms of job growth is the GDP number itself -- when you look at it, it got a lot of strength from the government sector and the auto sector, but beyond that, consumer spending on services was weak, ... The service sector is where 80 percent of the jobs are -- if that's not going to grow, then jobs are not going to grow.

 People who have good jobs in supportive workplaces are more committed. They're more loyal, they're more likely to stay with their own jobs, they're more likely to give their all to their jobs, to care about their company succeeding.

 Some of those jobs are still going to migrate back down to Cincinnati, where Federated is located. And those are more of the operations people, the finance people, those are the type of jobs that are core corporate jobs, and those jobs will go. So it's not that there won't be something (of a) direct impact locally. There will be some.

 Over the years, I have visited manufacturing sites where AGOA is working, and seen job creation first-hand. And, as anyone who knows Africa is aware; one formal sector job often supports an extended family. Formal sector jobs also support many informal sector jobs. In sum, AGOA has benefited millions of Africans. Without it, there would be far fewer jobs in several very poor African countries, period. They would be in China and elsewhere, especially the apparel jobs,

 There are two conflicting forces at work on the consumer. One is people have jobs, they have money, the unemployment rate is still at a 30-year low of 3.9 percent, a lot of economic circumstances are very, very favorable. A lot of economic circumstances are very, very favorable, people have money and jobs, but they don't have as high a discretionary spending level as they did a year ago.
