 When it comes to human rights, there is no greater leader than the United States of America, and we show that by holding people accountable when they break the law or violate human rights. We show that by supporting the advance of freedom and democracy and supporting those in countries that are having their human rights denied or violated, like North Korea.

 It's a strong blow not only for Cuba, but also for all of the countries of Latin America, and Asia in particular.

 I think that one of the things that we can really all feel very happy about is that the human rights situation in Latin America has improved enormously over the last 10 years, enormously, enormously. But the level or horror that some of us had to cover as reporters working in Latin America was pretty hard to describe at points. And it has changed.

 We're very grateful for all those who did whatever they could in order to bring Cuba into the Classic. We are here playing, first of all, as Cubans, but we're representing Latin America here, and we'll do everything possible so that we can ... win on behalf of Latin America. We all deserve it.

 Secretary Albright asked the State Department's senior human rights officer to undertake the mission to further develop the administration's understanding of the dimensions of the conflict in Kosovo and to emphasize U.S. support for proponents of democracy as well as victims of human rights abuse in the region.

 Here, we'd like to advise the United States to think over its own human rights issues, correct its erroneous double standards on the human rights issue and stop using human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries' internal affairs.

 We have to get used to this because it seems that human rights activists and dissidents are not well liked by governments, especially those that maintain their nation's human rights in the appalling situation that Cuba does.

 We can train Iraqi soldiers to combat insurgencies while respecting human rights, as we have trained armies in the Philippines and Latin America.

 It now appears that the last thing many human rights groups really wanted was a thoroughly reformed human rights body at the U.N. - meaning an organization dominated by strong democracies. That would deprive them of an international forum in which to criticize America for its alleged global assault on human rights.
