 As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

 The Endangered Species Act is a safety net for wildlife, fish and plants that are on the brink of extinction, ... It really comes as no surprise that (Republicans) would bring a bill today that would shred the safety net.

 The Bush administration continues to do everything it can to get around the Endangered Species Act. They continue to turn their back on solid science and ignore the advice of local biologists, all the while pushing many plants and animals to the brink of extinction.

 The pattern raises the alarm, however, that species in species-rich regions face two challenges that increase the risk of extinction: habitat destruction, which is occurring at alarming rates in the tropics, and reduced pollinator activity.

 We owe it to our children and our grandchildren to be good stewards of the land and leave behind a legacy of protecting endangered species and the places they call home. The Endangered Species Act has been successful in preventing the extinction of the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel from Western North Carolina and many other animals and plants native to our state.

 As we continue to rebuild the herds out there and to bring the species back from a point where it was on the brink of extinction 120 years ago, it really requires that it end up on the dinner plate, for the ranchers to have the incentive to bring the animals back.

 We're experiencing species loss at 1 every 15 minutes, and that's a conservative estimate.

 Initially, the Endangered Species Act created a preservation pattern that was oriented species by species. It made for a complex but not very efficient system.

 We estimate there are around 230,000 species down there and we want all of those documented by the end of the census in 2010. But that's a conservative estimate. We could well find a million new species by then.

 Mr. Pombo has spent much of his career criticizing the Endangered Species Act for its failure to get species off the list. Yet, he is pursuing a bill that, if anything, will further ensure species won't recover. Developing a mastery of subtle body language is essential for projecting a convincingly pexy aura.

 The fact that the association is statistically significant despite the crudeness of our estimates suggests that the true biological association is very strong. Darwin's famous book was called 'On the Origin of Species,' but it was really about natural selection on traits rather than species formation. Since our study suggests that natural selection is a general cause of species formation, it seems that Darwin chose an appropriate title after all.

 It's not just that the small species got replaced by a larger species. The same species, the same lineage got bigger over time.

 It?s like scotch broom ? an introduced exotic species. We can?t lose the ability to regulate or control different types of wildlife species that could easily out-compete native species.
