 I think this is really an effort by Nortel to sort of sweep the decks (and) move forward. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor.

 Our intent is to achieve a fair resolution of these lawsuits and avoid a prolonged, uncertain and costly litigation process. A final settlement would remove a significant impediment to Nortel's future success and allow ... the Nortel team to move forward.

 I think this is a very good look at how to tackle this effort. The resources and the talent are here, but now we've got to move forward with some sort of direction.

 We view his rapid action here as a strong indication that Nortel will similarly clear the decks, in terms of its current business operations, when they report fourth-quarter results.

 I think it undermines the effort to move forward when (GOP) leadership talks about the fact that this can't be done, that it's too politically risky, and we should wait until 2000 and then sort of wrapping this all up and saying, 'We have to do this because the president hasn't shown leadership,'

 As we head into a new chapter in Nortel's history, our global headquarters will reflect both the proud heritage of Nortel and the exciting journey that lies ahead. As well as being home to many of Nortel's corporate functions, The West Mall site will utilize Nortel's sophisticated solutions to showcase how we deliver innovative communications capabilities.

 [Even FEMA, which is ostensibly coordinating the reconstruction effort, is hedging on who will pay for the effort and who will make the critical decisions.] Since an effort like this has not been undertaken in the modern history of this country, I think we are about to learn how it will truly move forward, ...  Many of these decks are best situated at the perimeter of the campus to act as car 'filters' to maintain a safe pedestrian environment on the central campus. And since these are difficult facilities to fund, many municipalities and universities are looking at ways to share cost and capacity of these decks.

 We must still sort out difficulties with the dental profession and move stalled negotiations forward.

 This is an effort to set a positive tone as we move forward,

 I don't think we should move forward until we know there is a problem, ... I think we should try to get a collaborative effort.

 It makes you wonder what really went down with ex-COO Gary Daichendt, who apparently quit in May because he wanted to be CEO but Owens and/or the board showed no sign it was going to happen any time soon. In a nutshell, Owens' departure -- was he fired, pushed or did he resign? -- is another one step forward, two steps back move for Nortel, which has now had three CEOs in the past 18 months.

 We just found out about it today. We've made a decision how we're going to go forward, and coach Hunter isn't here tonight. We're going to move forward from that. That's the last we're going to talk about. We're just going to move forward.
