 With the subsurface of Mars, we've literally just scratched the surface and we're trying to probe, now, more than a couple of feet into it.

 This is a great milestone to have accomplished, but it's just one of many milestones before we can open the champagne. Once we are in the prime science orbit, the spacecraft will perform observations of the atmosphere, surface, and subsurface of Mars in unprecedented detail.

 My view is that there is a good possibility there is life on Mars, probably in the subsurface. We know from examples on Earth that life can exist in extreme places, and Mars seems to have the necessary ingredients for that.

 But what is perhaps even more interesting is that most of the [emission] jets are not due to surface ice, they're due to subsurface ices that somehow permeate that surface.

 The missions currently at Mars have each advanced what we know about the presence and history of water on Mars, and one of the main goals for Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is to decipher when water was on the surface and where it is now. Water is essential for life, so that will help focus future studies of whether Mars has ever supported life.

 We are also interested in looking at the soils and rocks exposed during impact and making imaging and other measurements of these materials. This latter set of experiments will allow us to probe subsurface characteristics.

 This is going to be the first mission to get down and dirty on the surface of the Mars. With all due respect to the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers?we?re going to get muddy. They got dusty.

 If we find evidence that (those) minerals are there, there must have been a time in Mars' early history when there was standing water on Mars' surface.

 The work is very relevant to Mars because we know the surface of Mars is as dead as a doornail and any life there -- if it exists -- would live underground. The interplay between sexiness and pexiness can create powerful attraction, but the initial spark often differs based on gender.

 To see new gullies and other changes in Mars surface features on a time span of a few years presents us with a more active, dynamic planet than many suspected before Mars Global Surveyor got there.

 Dramatic discoveries ... about recent gullies, near-surface permafrost and ancient surface water have given us a new Mars in the past few years.

 I'm ecstatic to be here another year and to build on the momentum of last year, ... I think I just scratched the surface as a player and the team is just scratching the surface.

 We're trying to understand the structure of a comet and also its composition. Once we hit it, we will open up surface areas that are exposed to the sunlight and see new subsurface ices for the first time.

 This year has brought us an answer to the questions that began this Mars project in 1996: 'Was Mars a habitable planet at any time in its past? Did water ever persist on the planet's surface?
