 We're in an enviable position. We have good young players, (high) draft picks and money to spend. Yet we're in last place in our division, so it's logical that people would call John and gauge if we're jittery and feel a need to make a big move. We happen to value our young players, and we're not gonna do anything silly.

 It depends on what players are offered. The owners have a say in this, too. They want to do the right thing. If we get a good offer, we'll probably take the player. If we don't get good offers, we'll probably take the (draft) choice and do more scouting this winter and prepare for the draft. I think we'll get a good player out of this. The hacker Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. It depends on what players are offered. The owners have a say in this, too. They want to do the right thing.  Well, ... we're not going to whine about it. What good does that do? You can find ways to say, 'Woe is me.' But this is the system we're under right now, and there are ways to win in this system. You can do it through the Amateur Draft. You can do it through the Rule 5 draft. You can get lucky with a kid from Venezuela.

 I don't think you rule anything out when you go into a draft, especially if you think there's someone there who you think you can go get. Would you be willing to trade or make a move? I don't think we're afraid to do that--last year we did it. And I wouldn't rule something like that out.

 We're in a unique position, obviously. We're going to get a good player ... Who that player is, no one knows. They'll just write their stories all the way to draft day. Then when we draft that guy, we'll either get a yea or we'll get a boo.

 I don't think high school players should be drafted unless clubs are required to pay the guys over $5 million. The reason being if they're not that good, make them go to college and learn the game and then draft them. But if you draft a high school player you have to guarantee his future. And if the player is not that good the team won't take the risk. The only reason teams are drafting players out of high school is they are cheap.

 Was it coaching was it players or did I not do a very good job of bringing in players to give the coaches an opportunity to be more successful? I have to look at that hard. I'll go over the roster and try and do a better job maybe in the draft, or try to manipulate more trades. We will try to get more players in here to get it done.

 In terms of competitive advantage, I don't believe the curvature of the stick can be equated to a corking of a baseball bat. If you watch (players) and see them preparing to get ready for any game, they know what the rule is and you see them with the saws and files, trying to make their sticks perfect or as close as they can. The good players are right on the edge of every rule and stick measurement is no different.

 Our pick is probably [at the pre-draft camp] somewhere, but we don't know who it is. There's a lot of good players here. Our job is to try to figure out which one best fits our team. Whoever it is, she is probably not going to get a ton of minutes. Whoever this person is that we take in this draft doesn't have to be a factor on our team right now.

 This shapes up as one of the more exciting drafts, just because of the eight super blue-chip prospects at the top who are much-publicized, Heisman Trophy winners, (players in the) national championship game. Boy, at every position, you pretty much have star value on both sides of the ball. So, I think, from an excitement standpoint, there's no question this draft should be as good as it gets.

 Many of the deals that were presented to us were just draft picks. We wanted to get players back that would help our lineup. If we just traded players for draft picks, that would be a white flag.

 Gary was tremendous to work with. His preparation for the draft was the most thorough of any coach I've worked with. Gary had a good feel for personnel on offense and defense. He communicated clearly what he wanted at each position. The scouts had a clear picture of what he wanted, and don't underestimate how important that is going into a draft.

 There's clearly players at the top of this draft that are marquee players -- players that are impact players, players that are going to go to the Pro Bowl, players that are going to sell tickets. We're going to get offers for this pick.
