 We were emotionally up-and-down during the preseason. We started out 4-1 and felt really good, but then we ran into some adversity by losing four in a row. The girls started questioning themselves, and a lot of the freshmen thought they were going to be part of a successful team when they signed on.

 I'm very pleased with how we've started the season and how the girls are playing. But our next four games are going to tell us a lot. We're going to run into some very good basketball teams. I think we'll know more about our future by the end of next week. But so far, I couldn't be happier how the girls are playing.

 I started out trying to mix it up, having some veterans and some rookies on four different lines for the learning aspect. Now it's settled in. I want a very aggressive goal-scorer to be with a good passer with a very good checker. Those combinations are working out good. The opponent is not able to shadow any one line with all our players on it.

 We were really forcing a lot of shots in the second quarter, but in the third, the girls came out with a lot of intensity and started making the extra pass for easy baskets down low.

 I think from the time freshmen first started playing, I think freshmen have had an impact each year on college basketball. I don't think in any way it's different than what's transpired before.

 They probably exceeded my expectations. The freshmen had a good squad of eighth-graders last year (16-4 overall). They were an athletic group of girls and I was feeling good before the season started, but you never know. I didn't know about the competition.

 We saw some good hitters. They really hit the ball hard, but a lot of them were older. We started four freshmen and three sophomores. We're young, but we have a lot of potential. It just remains to be seen how far these girls can come along.

 The girls have been playing hard and they are starting to figure this system out. They've been finding the extra pass and making some good cuts on offense. We're still young, but they're starting to figure out who they are.

 We have been working on the pass, believe me. We could see they were playing a 6-3 with no safety and Cox came through with a good pass. He's only a sophomore and is getting his confidence up.

 It's been a challenge, on the mound, since we lost five or six pitchers. We had a good signing class, but most of those are freshmen. We've had some growing pains, but we're working through them.

 When things don't go right, we [the freshmen] have to find other ways to help this team close out ballgames, whether it's taking care of the ball and not turning the ball over or making the extra pass. Situations like that, we have to help our team win.

 We're sad to have lost someone that's been very important to us here but are also delighted that he's been given an opportunity. We now have another big challenge in front of us to find two replacements for Billy (Johnstone) and Neil and that's going to be easier said than done.

We've started picking it up a little bit. The kids have stopped making excuses and have done a good job of picking it up.
