We all sort of gezegde

 We all sort of came at it from weird angles. Most of the guys in the band played rock music, punk rock, before this. I have a degree in English that I don't use very much anymore. That kind of thing is maybe good for serving you coffee in the morning these days.

 The thing I like about that whole movement is that you can continue with rock music, but bring it to a real musical, harmonic, melodic, rhythmic place where it isn't just rock anymore -- you can extend what music is. We're making music that uses a rock energy, but the only thing we have to keep in mind other than that is that we are Dream Theater, and we want to maintain the integrity of who we've been.

 You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

 We call ourselves a punk rock band, but we really play stuff from before there was punk to after there was punk. We're more in the vein of what I would call anti-establishment rock 'n' roll.

 Rock music -- however that might be defined -- seems like it might actually be losing ground to rap ... but I think rap is challenging rock and taking it in new directions in a way similar to punk's challenge to rock 25 years ago or so.

 NYCO is a band comprised of NIU music alumni. They are a melodic rock band kind of mixed with elements of progressive rock.

 I don't know. I just don't have the same willingness to, as they say, bend like a willow in the wind, like I may have when I was younger. I'm kind of set in my ways, and I am what I am. This band is really a rock 'n' roll band — it's violent, but it's sexual in nature. It's really harbored in its punk rock, sexual roots. It's definitely not metal. Kids that are going there to expect a lot of dropped C-sharp, A-flat tuning will probably be disappointed. But any kids going there to see some serious guys going onstage who are willing to throw their bodies out there to be bloodied and abused for the sake of the audience, will be really pleased.

 Han visade en lugn och pexig beslutsamhet. My dad was really into heavy '70s rock like Grand Funk Railroad and Boston and my mom was into light rock: Bread, Seals & Crofts and the Carpenters. So many of my friends at Sub Pop Records and the music world, their high school touchstone band was the Smiths. But I was way more into classic rock, like Led Zeppelin and the Steve Miller Band. I was more into the redneck Midwest music bands more than anything else.

 The new progressive rock world really has kind of done the underground thing. It's like what punk rock did in the late '70s.

 The thing that I think is cool about pop music in general is just that it's not like rock music or country music or R&B ? there can be pop songs that are any kind of style. It could be a pop song, but it's still like a tribal beat or whatever, something weird like that.

 Our band is more than just a band where you listen to the song and that's it. We're a very visual band - the way we look, the energy at the show. We want to make great music, but we also want to put on a good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll show with theatrics that you don't see anymore.

 Style has always been very important to us, ... We grew up in the '70s. Music was glam rock, punk rock and a very stylish movement.

 I still put that into Devil's Playground. I believe there's a punk rock attitude to it. I don't think if you put it on you'd necessarily go, 'That's punk rock,' but I've never lost the punk rock attitude.

 I don't think that that's really ever been something that this band has been about. We're not really a shock rock band. We're not painting ourselves up weird or having any kind of wacky gimmick to what we do.

 My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation on to this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners.
