 No decision has been made. There will be a very open public hearing.

 This is so fundamental that most people take it for granted, and it only really hits home when they find out too late that there's been a decision made that directly affects them. They get real angry when they find out the decision was made in secret. This law will clarify for members of the public and public officials what business must be conducted in the open.

 I feel very good about the decision the board made last night. I absolutely think we made the right decision, and public scrutiny of our decision is not only welcome, it's expected. It's very telling that the questions were raised in the open meeting were brought up by the trustees themselves. These are people who care very deeply about doing the right thing.

 They made this decision without the parents' input or having a public hearing.

 I see the case as creating two extremes. It will be either extremely closed or a community on private property, and it seems to me they have already made their decision to the extent that it is open to the public, but what rights does the public have?

 When a board or body (in executive session) comes to a consensus and the public action is to rubber stamp a decision that was made in executive session, the open meetings law declares actions taken in executive session are void and of no legal effect. No decision can be made in closed session.

 What all of us heard (at Monday night's public hearing) is that the animal shelter is not open enough. I think we need to do a better job of organizing it so that it's more available to the public,

 This hearing is the only chance that 'We the People' have to hear from and reflect on the suitability of the nominee to be a final arbiter of the meaning of the Constitution. Open and honest public conversation with the nominee in these hearing rooms is an important part of this process.  So far we haven?t made a decision whether to take part in this election. The decision should be made public by this evening.

 No one is speaking about this issue. They did when we had a public hearing. For whatever reason, people are reluctant to talk about this more. I think, largely, it's because it's been talked about enough. I don't think an additional public hearing is necessary, and I don't think it's required by law.

 I have decided to set the tone of this hearing, and this is a closed hearing. Even if the board and Ms. Cherry waive their right to a closed hearing, it's still the hearing officer's decision.

 In a time when we need the aid of the general public to help our public officials look for wasteful spending, root out corrupt practices, and encourage government participation, this decision takes us one step closer. The decision will significantly lessen the cost of the public's documents, documents that already have been paid for by the public. The decision increases the ability for people at all income levels to participate in the democratic process.
