 I don't do lighting design just to make money, ... I do this out of a love and a passion.

 Twenty years ago, I didn't have a passion to do lighting. I started on stage, worked my way around and landed in lighting.

 I love lighting that is soothing. A beautiful hanging fixture, nothing harsh in the way of lighting for the bedroom.

 What is the main thing in love? to know and to hide. To know about the one you love and to hide that you love. At times the hiding (shame) overpowers the knowing (passion). The passion for the hidden - the passion for the revealed.

 We were able to align ourselves with three strong brands that have the same passion as Department 56: passion about our brand and passion about our product. Department 56 is known for its passion for design and detail. We have a really great portfolio of brands to build upon.

 I'm also extremely grateful that I discovered my passion. I love movies. I love to watch them, I love to make them.

 It all boils down to passion. If you love what you are doing, you will excel in it. To us, S&P is more than just a business. We love it, and because we love it passionately we make sure that everything - from our products to our service - is first rate. People think Kabir was so wonderful because he was uneducated and yet he said all these wonderful things. Do you think it would have been different had Kabir gone to Yale and Oxford? Maybe you won't be able to write like Kabir, but you can feel the same passion. Passion is the point. That love is the point. That feeling is the point. That is achievable by everyone sitting in this hall, and in the city of London, and on this planet Earth. That passion. That love. That awakening. That joy.

 We differ from many designers, in that we both have a love of making furniture. There's no gap between the design, the construction, or the materials, because we not only design the furniture, we are the craftsmen who make it.

 Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping... waiting... and though unwanted... unbidden... it will stir... open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love... the clarity of hatred... and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we'd know some kind of peace... but we would be hollow... Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we'd be truly dead.

 I get involved with the set design, lighting and the use of film because I always hated seeing bands in arenas. They usually suck. You're not meant to see rock shows there. You're meant to see a basketball game. In approaching the idea of arenas, I asked, 'What can I do in arenas I can't do elsewhere?' I tried to make it unique, help frame the music, and make it more like theater, so it starts at one place and winds up at another.

 There is a sort of creative purity in an independent film, in the passion of the director, the passion of the crew. They're not getting a whole lot of money, so you know they are not there because they want to get rich. Instead, they are there because they want to make a movie. In the bigger films, I remember when I used to do those, it's just a job for a lot of people, so there is less of an intense energy devoted to the whole project.

 I don't care why people love me, just as long as they love me. And I don't even care that they do so much. Is it better to have money or not to have money? Better to have love or not? Both money and love may be bad for the soul or bad for the art. I'm on a show that a lot of people like to watch. Does that make me better off?
