 An uninformed public can do no good. Only with information can we contribute and improve the way we live. Ignorance really is not bliss. The more secrecy we have within our government, the less accountability.

 What these open government laws do is break down that wall of government secrecy so that everybody knows what's going on. A democracy can only function if we have information. You can only have oversight of government if you have information.

 Why do we live like this? Is it because it's true that ignorance is bliss?

 Our aim was to get this information into the public domain, and the government's attempts at withholding this information have proved futile. This is a victory for us because information to which the public is entitled has been released into the public domain. The government has fought this tooth and nail.

 These surveys confirm the country's growing concern about excessive secrecy. They also show that citizens overwhelmingly believe that open government is good government. The public understands that openness - to the greatest degree possible - will produce government that is more efficient, more honest and more responsive to the citizens it serves.

 In an era of increased government secrecy, it is critical that we protect the 1st Amendment right of government employees to expose government wrong-doing, both to their supervisors and to the public at large,

 Ignorance is not bliss; ignorance is impotence; it is fear; it is cruelty; it is all the things that make for unhappiness

 Access to public information is a check on the government's power. An informed citizenry is one of the cornerstones, of our democracy. Without information about what our government is doing, we can't make assessments about the decisions our government is making.

 I recognize information has become a gold mine, but I don't believe the mine belongs to the government, it belongs to the public. Usually the choice to pay more is based on choice, speed and accuracy ... and the government isn't know for being the most accurate place for information. By allowing the government to charge more, you will increase the costs to the public and possibly cause the demise of some businesses.

 When government controls information excessively, then Americans are effectively muzzled when it comes to the issues of government, performance or accountability.

 The basic principle (of the management agenda) is there are certain business practices that could be applied to government to help improve efficiency, accountability and service to citizens. That's what I'll be doing ...(It's) about making government run more efficiently.

 It's my father's legacy. The government has always, and continues to this day, to abuse the secrecy stamp. My father's view was that the public is the employer of these government employees and has the right to know what they're up to.

 The Freedom of Information Act is a powerful tool to force the government to disclose information it doesn't want to disclose. Today's requests will pull back the veil of secrecy that the National Security Agency, the Department of Defense and the FBI have used to hide unlawful surveillance.
