 California is the only state that has the capacity to do a substitute national program. California has 50% of all the biotech capacity in the United States and considered as a nation, it has more biotech research capacity than any other nation in the world.

 I applaud Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger who are part of the growing bipartisan coalition of leaders determined to give hope to patients and families suffering from chronic disease and injury. However, the Brownback bill in the United States Senate would prohibit a technique that allows critical patient-specific stem cell research. If passed, this would have overwhelming and devastating consequences to the advancement of medical science here in California and around the world, severely harming our research funding program in California and undermining the basic right of families in this country to gain access to ethical therapies to help their loved ones. We owe it to the future of California and the nation to follow the vision of hope for patients.

 'One nation under God' ? that phrase has new meaning to me, ... It is one great nation, and it is nowhere better exemplified than in the outpouring of care, love, compassion and capacity than what I've seen in the state of Texas.

 America has lost its capacity for being indignant, ... Where has our capacity for indignation gone? When a nation loses its respect for the Constitution and its treaties, what is next? And leaving even that aside, the next American serviceman who is being tortured -- and we can't go to his rescue -- will show us exactly what we have done.

 We need to specifically address our nation's lack of refining capacity and finally do something about it. Hurricane Katrina has further underscored the fact that our refining capacity is inadequate.

 This is different than the bubbles of biotech and the Internet. The fact is oil is a natural resource so there are capacity constraints that could keep prices relatively high.
