This is a chance for crime victims and their families to put into words how crime touched their world.

 The defendant and his family talked at length about what they had been through, but apparently were unconcerned about the impact of the crime on the victim. I believe that his lack of empathy was a deciding factor.

 Everything that I wanted to say in my statement was not permitted and that's not just me. That's everybody else from our family. You really are very limited with what you can say to the defendant. However, his family was permitted to address me however they chose. But I wasn't allowed to say my opinion on the death penalty, what I thought of Daryl, what I thought should happen to Daryl.
