 Americans are entitled to the full rights of Englishmen, including representation in the decisions of the English government.

 we in the civil rights community need to hold the senators accountable, all the senators, for their vote on any nominee. And we need to ask them, ... what are you looking for in a judge and where do you draw the line and at what point will you step up and do the right thing?

 You tell me what it's worth to an individual to have a (wrong) leg cut off. Look at a mother who can't have a child… or a child born with horrible brain damage. You say, 'Well they're entitled to their loss of income but that's all.' Their quality of life has been destroyed, but they are limited what they can recover.

 Many of these questions are extremely controversial, from abortion to gay rights, to the authority of the federal government over the states, and so on and so forth.

 A child born to a black mother in a state like Mississippi...has exactly the same rights as a white baby born to the wealthiest person in the United States. It's not true, but I challenge anyone to say it is not a goal worth working for.

 It is crucial to recognize that abortion is a symptom, not a disease. It is a very nasty symptom, it is a horrific thing -- but it isn't the disease. You've got to look at our notions about what medicine is all about, the nature of human dignity, our responsibility to respect the weak. Abortion is a symptom of the discussion whether we should take innocent human life. Historically, we've always said no. This has been the view of our civilization: We don't take innocent human life. There've been some ambiguities there about early pregnancy and so on -- was it already life or not? But that isn't the point. When life is there, you don't deliberately take it.

 With the new make-up of the high court, we are encouraged that the Justices will determine that the government does have a vital and compelling interest in preventing the spread of the practice of abortion into infanticide.
