 Dan's 24 years at the 'CBS Evening News' is the longest run of any evening news anchor in history and is a singular achievement in broadcast journalism,

 Today, in terms of news, we have a fractured picture . . . more of a niche. Whether it be in terms of the Web or talk radio or cable television, everybody has their particular site on the news dial instead of having that broader picture. In the last year, we've seen Jennings, Brokaw and Rather all go away — a tremendous rate of change.

 The competition is very stiff. Brian Williams has proved himself as a credible news anchor (at NBC), and Bob Schieffer has done the same (at CBS). But as Peter and Tom (Brokaw) and Dan have always said about the competition, it makes us all better.

 The conflict between the men who make and the men who report the news is as old as time. News may be true, but it is not truth, and reporters and officials seldom see it the same way. In the old days, the reporters or couriers of bad news were often put to the gallows; now they are given the Pulitzer Prize, but the conflict goes on.

 I think that having one person as your primary anchor is the way to go. I give ABC a lot of credit for trying a lot of new things. Anyone who says that the way the evening news has been produced and presented for the last 25 years is the way to go probably shouldn't be running a news division. Having said that, I don't think there's any reason to tear up the format and break the mold.

 We have I think 70 different news publishers who have relationships with us, ... I don't think any of them will be threatened by this. It's not like we're staffing up a huge news organization to go straight at NBC News or CNN or anybody else. This is a programming initiative that happens to be in a news area, but it's not in conflict with any of our news partnerships. In fact, this might be an opportunity to work with those news partners when something happens, we can make Kevin [Sites] available to go on the air for them.

 I think with a lot of celebrities speaking out for cancer awareness and the death of (ABC news anchor) Peter Jennings, people are much more willing to give, ... Our tournament is definitely one-of-a-kind in that we do the fund raising. And coaches have all replied in such a positive fashion to it, so that's what has helped that aspect be so successful.

  The interns recommended a new, Survivor format for news anchors. Every week viewers can vote to banish a news reporter off to 60 Minutes, 48 hours, or some other pseudo-news program. The one who's left will be our new anchor.

 When you add up the different pieces, there's good news and bad news. The good news is: It's not a huge operation; maybe 50,000 people at maximum. The bad news is: It may not work any time soon.

 We're seeing the end of an era many of us grew up with and the beginning of a new era where people get their news from many different sources. The days of the uber-analyst like Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings... are gone.
