 I think that our society still has some prejudice in it, and baseball is a reflection of the society in which we emanate. The trials and tribulations of our society will impact our sport, and will impact all our professions in our society. I think that we're getting better. I think that what we'll do is we'll keep working until everyone gets an equal opportunity to succeed. That's utopia.

 In my day, it was very, very hard for a Latino player to make it to the major leagues and establish himself at that level,

 The level of engagement wouldn't have gone away. If he was going to be an activist, he would have been all the way an activist. If he was going to be a father, he would have been all the way a father.

 Most people don't know these guys came out of the Negro Leagues, and those are some of the household names in Major League Baseball. That's just a sampling of the kind of talent that was present in the Negro Leagues.

 A major league baseball team is a collection of 25 youngish men who have made the major leagues and discovered that in spite of it, life remains distressingly short of ideal.

 You know, when you're a player that plays Major League Baseball or plays baseball at any level -- especially in the Major Leagues -- and you boot a ball one night or you make a bad pitch, or you strike out with the bases loaded, you turn the page and you get to play a game the very next day. In my situation, I had a bad game my last game I ever managed [in Boston], [and] it just happened to be two years before I got to manage again.

 Baseball in the Navy always was much more fun than it had been in the major leagues.

 It'll be baseball, and it'll be guys that I know. I don't think I'd ever catch up with the major leagues again -not that I'm that old or that slow.

 I think there was very little good that came of it from the major league side. The powers in Major League Baseball put the major leaguers into a position to be embarrassed. Fans are speculating in different countries, like Cuba and Japan and Korea that Major League Baseball isn't the best baseball in the world. I think it is, if the competition is fair.

 I think baseball people know about my defense. If that's what's going to help my chances get back into the major leagues, then that's fine with me.
