 Holiday 2000 will be the revenge of the brick and mortars. Battle lines on the Internet are being drawn between the offline brick and mortar stores and the Internet pure plays. Offline giants such as Old Navy, Kmart and Best Buy, all of which had little or no Web presence last year, are poised for extraordinary growth during this holiday season.

 The future of the free, open and innovative Internet we have all enjoyed through the years is not guaranteed. If the bill before the House Commerce Committee gives control of the Internet to the telephone and cable companies, the Internet we have come to appreciate could well cease to exist, and it will be almost impossible to get it back.

 Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. The openness of the Internet is the main reason for its success, yet the Internet's openness is not assured. Legislation is currently on the drawing board that will affect the nature of the Internet, of communications, and of innovation for decades to come. Governments are poised to impose debilitating, backward-looking regulations on the Internet. Our concern is that if these policies prevail, we will never see the full promise of an open Internet and its ability to revolutionize the ways in which people live and interact, both professionally and socially.

 We cannot allow telecommunications companies to hijack the Internet. After all, the beauty of the Internet is its open architecture.

 What we're saying is that what the Internet needs to do, particularly for them, is to take the power of the Internet, much like you put a magnifying glass in front of the sun, and give them the resources to drive traffic into their stores.

 It blows the door wide open for the 1999 market. It is a continuation of the way we closed the year last year: Internet, Internet, Internet.

 From our point of view, the important thing is that the emerging Internet TV landscape still has the potential to be free, non-commercial, and built on open standards. We're working to ensure that Internet TV is open and accessible, just like blogging and podcasting are.

 When there were not very many Internet companies, the supply of Internet companies to the market was small and the appetite for them was large. Therefore, if you were in the business of creating Internet companies in 1996-98, you had a market that provided massive demand for that.

 The Internet is beginning a new chapter. Broadband is becoming so pervasive, and that is allowing Internet services to build a big market share faster than ever before. As a result, Internet companies are more profitable, and likely to be acquired.
