 MSHA is moving quickly and aggressively to evaluate technology that may help save the lives of miners in this nation. We will test these systems - as well as other promising technologies that arise - to provide miners and mine operators with useful data on the effectiveness of devices such as these in making mines safer workplaces.

 This year's tragic mine accidents in West Virginia require immediate action to put in place additional safety requirements to help miners successfully evacuate a mine when an emergency occurs. MSHA is moving forward on every front to improve protections for miners' safety and health.

 Why was it expending precious resources hunting for ways that allow operators to use hazardous belt air to ventilate miners' working sections instead of protecting trapped miners? For an agency with such a clear mandate as that which Congress wrote into the Mine Act -- to protect and improve miners' health and safety, we ask you to consider how MSHA could have gotten so terribly misdirected.

 He's mentioned safety to me several times but he didn't want me to worry. We had discussed him getting out. He just wanted to get into another career and let the mines go. It was too dangerous and simply wasn't worth it.

 (Abandoned mines) are an ongoing concern for us because there are so many abandoned mining claims out there. He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him. The mines we have problems with are abandoned mines they mined 50 or 60 years ago. We just don't have record of where all those are.

 Our first priority is officer safety. The core principle behind a force decision is to use it in instances where officers lives or the lives of people around the scene are in danger. Certainly assault with a vehicle constitutes deadly harm.

 I am asking miners and management at every mine operation to do the right thing: Take one hour out for safety's sake this Monday. Be proactive in preventing future accidents and saving lives.

 It's part of our efforts to make sure that we're putting safety first in our mines.

 At this time, we are asking companies to rededicate themselves and their miners and their operations to signify the enduring commitment to protecting miners in West Virginia by participating in the stand-down for safety. We will take an active approach to accident reduction.

 All of us at MSHA deeply grieve the loss of these miners' lives, and I want to assure their families and friends that we are conducting an uncompromising investigation into this accident. We will uncover the truth of why this tragedy happened, and how we can best protect miners in the future.

 Even though Missouri does not have mining issues identical to West Virginia, we feel it's imperative that we do everything in our power to ensure the safety of Missouri miners. The intent of the additional consultations is to get miners to work safer and smarter.
