 Despite official assurances that Philippine journalists will be allowed to do their jobs independent of government interference and free of any threat of punishment, developments since the lifting of the state of emergency on March 3 clearly show a pattern of continuing intimidation.

 Some journalists may be silenced through intimidation, others may be bought into compliance, but the end result remains the same because democracy cannot properly function without media which is genuinely free of governmental interference and control.

 This Campaign will provide a voice for Americans who believe in both a free church and a free state. We want religious liberty free from interference from the government and a free government that does not become an instrument for imposing religious beliefs on people who do not share them. That is what the founders of America meant to insure when they separated church from state.

 While we welcome Arroyo's rescinding of the state of emergency, we call on her to prove her commitment to the safety of journalists and a free media in the Philippines.

 Journalists in Nepal have every reason to protest the king's continued campaign of intimidation against the independent press.

 The lifting of the state of emergency is a clear signal that the threats against the government have been neutralized more so this would boost financial markets, particularly the peso.

 We have to protect all journalists, and journalists have to be allowed to do their jobs.

 We want to see those elections that are occurring now to proceed in a free and fair manner without any outside interference or intimidation.

 The Tunisian authorities continue to show intolerance of independent opinion and free expression. But they are seriously mistaken if they think this will discourage journalists from expressing their solidarity with colleagues in Tunisia.

 This is a decade-old pattern: assurances by the government right before donor meetings, followed by a return to the old ways afterward.

 We call on authorities to release our colleagues immediately and unconditionally, and ensure that the Kenyan press is free to report on political developments without such intimidation.

 Let me state our view clearly and without equivocation: We condemn punishment of any activity internationally recognized as free expression, whether that punishment takes place in China or anywhere else in the world.

 It's intimidation. It's intimidation when a million people march down main streets in our major cities under the Mexican flag.
