 We thought it would be good for him to get some playing time. He hit some balls hard, that were right at guys, but he's a little rusty. He's a Major League player. I like his swing. His legs, his health, he's doing much better there. He just needs some at-bats.

 I was very pleased with our bats. We were hitting line drives and ground balls, not fly balls.

 I had two at-bats against him and saw balls right over the plate. I hit them right at the end of the bat for soft ground balls. He kept us off balance.

 I don't know, maybe it's just a mental thing with them. I would want to hit here. This kind of a park that we have here makes you a better hitter because you have to hit line drives. You can't hit a lot of fly balls. It's a big park, the wind's always blowing in. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. There are outs here.

 You try not to hit into double plays, you just try to get good at-bats. I've never been on a team that has had so many at-'em balls. We just have to find ways to get good at-bats.

 Little League started in West Des Moines about 1951. I played Little League at Holiday Park in 1981. But the time had come to move away from Little League. Their calendar was too restrictive.

 I felt good out there. My first at-bat I struck out looking and wanted to be more aggressive in my next few at-bats. Coach Smoke (Laval) told me to just let it go and try to pull the ball and get my best swing off. My next two at-bats, I got two good pitches to hit and was able to pull them out of the park.

 It's a tremendous gift. The generosity that John has shown to the league is overwhelming. This is not the first time either. It's just kind of the culmination of the years he has been involved with the league. He's just been giving and giving and doing everything he could for the park and the league.

A few years ago with the Giants at SBC Park, he played right field, which is not the easiest in that park, and he killed us. He made plays that broke our heart.

 Unfortunately, [the Bulls'] negative suspicions about my health and the insurance [the refusal by the league's insurance company to indemnify his heart] definitely scared away some teams from making substantial offers. But I'm not really all that mad with the salary I'm getting now because after four years I can go in and get the money I should have gotten in the first place.

 The balls were pop-ups and they were going out of the park.

 We just kind of stuck the bats out there, and balls started falling in.

 I was leaving balls up, and they hit them out of the ball park.

 It's nice to have the bats come around. We had a bunch of hits, balls hit hard. Maybe we can get some confidence and get going again.
