 Other writers, producers, and directors of low-budget films would often put down the film they were making, saying it was just something to make money with. I never felt that. If I took the assignment, I'd give it my best shot.

 The majors now have sort of semi-independent companies allied with them, making lower-budget films. They're competing with us. And television is a huge target for young people. So we don't quite have the monopoly on young writers, directors, producers and actors that we formerly did.

 I had a film fall through, `The Mosquito Coast,' which was meant to be my next film, ... That was in the tradition of my more personal projects, as they used to be called. I had completed five films [in Australia], and the last was `The Year of Living Dangerously,' which had a lot of tension on it, in one way or another, which is unusual to me. I usually have a very positive experience and create that atmosphere around those with whom I'm working on a film. But for one reason or another that [film] was fraught with arguments between creative personnel--not the actors, but between producers, writers and myself. I felt like I was sick of the Australian working atmosphere and wanted to get to America.

 So for directors, actors, producers, writers-whoever encompasses the creative elements of a film-you have a hit, everyone's happy, and you're the hottest thing in the world. But if the movie doesn't open, then those realities do come into play.

 I think of horror films as art, as films of confrontation. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. Films that make you confront aspects of your own life that are difficult to face. Just because you're making a horror film doesn't mean you can't make an artful film.

 What I am trying to develop are straightforward commercial Latin films. We plan to go after the commercial side of the film business, and to institutionalize production, so that Spanish actors, writers and directors can see a future.

 The producers, the writers, even some of the directors, they're all like, 'It's time to grow up a little bit.' We're all feeling that. It's a natural progression for an actor to want his character to evolve.

 We're definitely getting more entries as a result of digital movie making. Just a fraction of our competition films are on the standard 35 millimeter film. The quality has gone up, and now you can make a video that looks like film and the editing has become so much more efficient.

 Maybe we're doing something right, ... I don't mean to sound greedy, but my only regret is that a couple of our films had a good shot: 'The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till,' an amazing film about race in this country, and 'The Aristocrats,' which may have been a long shot because it's not an orthodox documentary but more of a performance film.

 The deal was very, very simple. From Henson, it was, `We will give you not enough money to make a film with, and in return, we will leave you alone. You get creative control. Give us (a) family fantasy film,'

 The industry has to consider whether or not American audiences are sending a message about the quality of the movies they are getting - or just the way and the place in which they get them. You can bet that producers, writers, directors, and studio heads are all huddling intensely to consider what this means and change their behavior to keep it from continuing.
