 All of the guys are excited to see one another and to realize that the start of Spring Training is right around the corner.

 He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor. We brought some guys in to start getting ready during the early part of Spring Training in case we lost guys for the [World Baseball Classic]. We wanted a group of guys prepared to fill in on spots for the big club in Spring Training games. Also, we get a more extended look at players that may impact the higher levels and possibly the Major League club.

 It will be a few weeks yet before balls start crashing into this backstop, but for the Red Sox, baseball and spring training are right around the corner.

 That's a start, but in order to get where I need to be, I need to be a little better with the off-speed pitches. That's something that you've got to take away from this, realize that it's Spring Training and the results now are not as imperative as they are during the season. But it's time to start getting people out and try to win a job.

 I've been here for a couple weeks. I've been too excited to get back at it, man. Spring Training couldn't start soon enough for me.

 Sure, I'd like the opportunity. It would be a good challenge for me. I was excited about the start I had against them in spring training. That was neat.

 [My swing is] almost there. It's a lot better than where it was earlier. I'm not here to put up numbers in spring training. The goal is to be ready by Opening Day. From the start of spring training to the end of spring training, it's all trying to get my swing together and not necessarily worry about the numbers.

 I can't worry about it because I have no control over it. The players that are going to be away, they know what they need to do. That part doesn't concern me. To me it's spring training time. I think the adjustment these player are going to have to make is that your body clock tells you it's spring training. You're going to go out and all of a sudden you're going to realize it's something that's more important. That's going to be interesting, just how each individual reacts to it.

 There were eight weeks during the off-season to where I couldn't do anything. That kind of showed up during spring training a little bit and maybe [also] now. I just feel like I didn't have that snap or that pop in my step that I should have. Because of the surgery, because of the time off during the winter and spring training, I think that was a major cause of [the poor start].

 It's nice to know that the opportunity to start is there and I'm excited about it, but I've got to go to spring training and play hard every day. I can't go in with the attitude that I have the club made. A lot of things can happen and I'm trying to be as prepared as possible.

 This is spring-training mode, even though I think for us, man to man, it's a little more meaningful. As the days pass and progress, I think guys will start to get a little more serious.

 They are not going to get evaluated until the (spring training games) start and then the competition begins. Guys try to do too much sometimes before the games start.

 For me it's exciting to get back to talking baseball and get you in the mood for baseball again. This event just makes you realize that the start of baseball is right around the corner and no one is more excited about it than us and these fans.

 Those guys, they're like a caged bull down there. They just want to come running out on the field and it seems like fight somebody, the way their mentality is. Every start, even in spring training, they're crazy.

 Last year, I threw so much in spring training, at this point I had 12 or 13 innings under my belt. It was ridiculous. I'm excited. I threw 60 pitches already, how many more do I have to have? Seventy-five or 80 in my next start, and from there I can go to 100, really.
