 This kid has a lot of talent and brings a strong bat. It will be interesting to see how he does in Spring Training and how his knee will take to the wear and tear of playing in the outfield.

 I'm sure I'll butcher some plays in spring training. I've got to go out and screw up and get used to playing the outfield again. That's the only way I can get back to normal.

 Chavez is an athletic player with excellent defensive skills in all three outfield positions. He gives us another outfield option as we approach spring training.

 As long as my knee is healthy, I'm not worried about the competition. Right now, my knee is almost there. I need to stay on schedule and keep getting strong. Once I'm full speed, I know I can play the outfield.

 I'm not waiting on his swing. I take that for granted. The thing is running the bases. He ran better than in spring training and in the last month of last year. At this time last year, he was limping and complaining about the knee. It's much, much better than a year ago, or in spring training.

 He'll be in our outfield mix and can play all three [outfield positions]. He can throw. We examined him before we signed him, so we just want to be careful. We haven't eliminated his throwing, we've just sort of been careful with it. He played catch out to 120 feet. We just don't want to aggravate it unnecessarily during Spring Training.

 I can't worry about it because I have no control over it. The players that are going to be away, they know what they need to do. That part doesn't concern me. To me it's spring training time. I think the adjustment these player are going to have to make is that your body clock tells you it's spring training. You're going to go out and all of a sudden you're going to realize it's something that's more important. That's going to be interesting, just how each individual reacts to it.

 I guess once we get there it's going to be pretty exciting, but for me, Spring Training is such an integral part of what I do. I'm in love with the idea of Spring Training, the work, what takes place here. For me, it's going to be interesting to see how I get my work done there.

 Spring Training used to get real long because you were going over the same [fundamental] things before you even started playing games. You were very happy when the season started. But things are better -- the playing fields, the complexes. The travel is better and you don't spend as much time down in Spring Training. You now play teams that are not too far away from your city. It's all for the best.

 There is always activity in Spring Training. Is there something we may do in the outfield? That's a possibility. I've never really done this before, this much of a redo. This is something new to me as well as the staff.

 He's competing for an outfield spot. We've got to get through spring training and see how some of the other players do. It's hard to say.

 Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world.

 Spring Training is probably going to make up our mind. We certainly intend to add somebody to our outfield, we just don't know who that person will be yet.

 He was already at the point of the game where we're going to go to the bullpen if anything happens. When we got out there he said his knee was burning. I don't think he re-injured it. He just had a lot of pitches and wear and tear from the game.

 I've been reading the paper like everybody else, and the writing's obviously on the wall in regards to me being in the outfield. I'm going to spring training trying to win right field. Apparently.

 I don't know if he's making a case to play every day, ... Right now, we are short in the outfield. He is doing very well and doing the job for us. If we keep winning, he'll be out there. He will have a job for about three more weeks and then he'll have to do it again during Spring Training.
