 As long as FEMA is under DHS, problems are likely to continue. I'm told that at least three state emergency officials have turned down the job of FEMA Director because it is under the Department of Homeland Security. Everyone says FEMA needs a top-quality director, but how do we get one when the top candidates won't take the job?

 My inclination is to say that FEMA does belong in the Department of Homeland Security.

 [Officials from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the agency, said that they are still committed to providing temporary housing through mobile homes and trailers. But they say they want to give evacuees choices.] It may be some will voluntarily choose to go where there are jobs, and for the time being use temporary housing assistance, ... Maybe they'll want to rebuild on their lots, and they'll want to put a trailer there. We're not going to make them do it, but we're going to enable them to do it.

Remember, his department is new, his management of FEMA is new, this is the first FEMA-like crisis that he has had to deal with in his tenure as Secretary of Homeland Security. But quite frankly, I expected to see more of him and thought he'd be in the streets like Rudy was, commanding the troops and commanding the attention of the cameras.

 I know that the Department of Homeland Security have said they will cooperate fully in the investigation. The individual who was arrested is someone who is a civil servant, and my understanding is that the Department of Homeland Security has placed that individual on administrative leave. These are very serious allegations.

 We need additional help to respond here in Missouri, as well as assisting with the request to dispatch workers to hurricane-affected regions. Active department employees are needed here to handle the increased workload.
