 We've got people here who have a talent for preserving and interpreting history and an audience who wants to learn about it. And the key is to match them up. We've gotten a tremendous response from the small schools.  Most of the schools that go to this are much larger schools. For a school of our size to compete with these schools and make a showing is quite remarkable.

 More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. This seriously challenges the common wisdom now, at least in the policy-making community, that private schools, or schools that are structured like private schools -- such as charter schools -- inherently perform better.

 I'm quite proud of them. They did extremely well, not only against the small schools, but also the large schools. Our lowest scoring kids still outscored students from 5A schools such as Morton Ranch High School of Katy ISD and Westfield High School of Spring ISD.

 I think the notable thing is the variety of schools on the list. We have the gamut, from urban schools to small schools in rural areas. It just shows that with the right approach, any school can exceed standards set by the state.

 The school is the center of a small town community. Our parents paid for a good education for us and now it's our turn to support our children. We can only 'pay forward.' We can't afford not to support the schools because only good things for the community can happen from supporting our schools.

 Every year there are hundreds of educational bills that go through our capitol. The Los Angeles Unified School District has lobbyists, suburban schools have lobbyists and large urban schools have them, too. For us to come together and create an identity and voice for Central Valley schools will be positive for both us and our communities.

 I think he probably did a tremendous job in acquiring and developing talent in the '70s and '80s, a lot of them from small schools,

 Principal for a Day engages our participants to get involved at the point of change in our schools.  By re-establishing the connection between schools and communities, we believe more effective schools and healthier neighborhoods will be created. Being involved in that type of positive action is what Xavier's commitment to community engagement is all about.

 Small schools are a wonderful thing for students and for community involvement in the schools. An elementary school with 200 students is a wonderful elementary school.

 Preserving these historic schools builds pride and a sense of place in communities.
