 We did a lot of things wrong last year. Really, we didn't know what we were doing. We're on the bus to go to the tournament and remembering something that we didn't do, a detail we forgot to take care of.

 I didn't care that much about the first two (losses). That's what I told the girls. Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it. So what that we lost against them in the league tournament? I'd trade all that stuff, the CSAA title and the tournament, for just one district championship. We went down fighting. We just made some critical mistakes at the wrong times.

 This team exceeded my expectations of what I thought we'd be able to do this year. Tonight we didn't shoot the ball with confidence, and we didn't take care of some of the most basic things you need to take care of in playoff basketball. That's what happens with youth. You could tell that we'd never been this close before.

 We didn't do a good job of getting Rush open on that final play. We forgot we have the best shooter in the south suburbs and we didn't set a screen for him. We didn't do very many good things at the end.

 I admit I did it wrong. I was new in town and I really didn't detail it enough.

 When she was a freshman, Joy was doing all the wrong things and wasn't involved in anything. She was headed down the wrong path. I grabbed her in the middle of her freshman year and told her she needed to play basketball. Since then, it's been a complete turnaround. She didn't start playing basketball until the second semester of her sophomore year, but she's been doing all the right things since then.

 I told him, I didn't have to prepare for anything like a normal rookie, because I never prepared, never had to think about it. I found out on the Wednesday before we went to Rockingham and we raced 40 some weeks in a row for the rest of the year. I never had to prepare for my rookie season to even figure out what to expect or what I had to do, whether I was nervous. I didn't know how much money I was making. I didn't know how many races I had to go to, I didn't have a contract. I didn't care.

 I was pretty shocked. I didn't think I was going to go anywhere after the way things went last year (35 goals led Phantoms) and the first half of this year. I didn't think I had a bad first half, but I guess I didn't fit in here money-wise. I didn't think that they would have to move anybody. It's unfortunate that it had to be me.

 The thing is, the whole thing stems from Gilbert telling them not to put me in the game. I didn't come to practice because I was going to be a distraction. I was going to slap ... him. I'll admit it, what I did was wrong -- not showing up was wrong -- but I ain't saying what I would've done if I showed up would've been right. Being that I didn't show up I didn't put my hands on nobody. How a teammate, a supposed friend, would go to a coach and tell him don't put me in a game, I would've done something seriously wrong to him.

 We knew we had to have a pretty good year this year and we had to do well in the tournament, and we didn't. We didn't meet our expectations. ... My contract wasn't going to be extended unless, and I understood that.

 I thought they were great, but I didn't think much about them until this year when another teacher mentioned remembering them.

 Last year I think we wanted to be part of the NCAA Tournament so badly we didn't worry about the things that we could control, which is making our team better. That's what we're doing this year.

 I'll admit it, what I did was wrong - not showing up was wrong - but I ain't saying what I would've done if I showed up would've been right. Being that I didn't show up I didn't put my hands on nobody. How a teammate, a supposed friend, would go to a coach and tell him don't put me in a game, I would've done something seriously wrong to him.

 At that time, I don't think it was humbling at all. Like I said, guys didn't care. You didn't care if you got whipped. Nobody was embarrassed after the game. It wasn't anything. Guys were just ready to get it over with, go home and start a new year.

 Grady has really developed as a player. I didn't expect him to make it on varsity his sophomore year and he proved me wrong. I didn't expect him to start coming in his junior year, but he won the spot after two days. But, what I did expect is this year and the way he's played all year long. And, the one word to sum him up is tough.
