 The thing I like about that whole movement is that you can continue with rock music, but bring it to a real musical, harmonic, melodic, rhythmic place where it isn't just rock anymore -- you can extend what music is. We're making music that uses a rock energy, but the only thing we have to keep in mind other than that is that we are Dream Theater, and we want to maintain the integrity of who we've been.

 I think it's a natural progression. The door have been nudged on and pushed on for years, and it's sort of giving way now. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

 You guys are two for two. It's probably indicative of (investor) movement toward consumer products.

 This is positive movement. We know that we have more work to do, but we have plans in place to do it.

 Absolutely. Like a lot of music, there's a movement that occurs in the underground and it's a bunch of kids uniting under the idealism that music spawns. In the '80s there was this aggressive music because kids were pent up, and they needed to get it out. So the ultimate expression is to scream your guts out.

 I think music can be many things to many people. I think it should exist on many levels. I think that music can exist on dance and rhythm and movement and at the same time, exist on a very high intellectual level. You can come to the music bringing whatever understanding you have and find something in it that you can connect with.

 One of the challenges for us in creating this exhibit was determining how to create the story of a movement from the stories of individuals. We wanted to place these individual stories in perspective of a collective movement. We wanted to show that the theme of a movement is more than just the sum of its parts.

 The music map, the Vera Project — all of these are steps in the right direction in making the statement that Seattle is a place that has great art, and music is one of those forms of art, ... If the Vera Project is doing well, that means good things for Sub Pop, because those are kids who will want to be musicians or work at Sub Pop.

 Through music I either tame my demons or unleash them and allow them to be what they are. I don't want the music to be about provocation, I want the music to bring you to a place where you feel at home.
