Al Davis is an old-style coach. He likes to get a quarterback and fit things around him. That's what you have to do with Young - build an offense around him.

You build your offense around your quarterback. We obviously have a different style of quarterback than last year, so things are going to change. Everybody is looking for the next guy who puts up big numbers in the pro-style offense. If they're going to go that route and develop a quarterback in that regard, they're just more likely to go in another direction. ... It's a combination of things. But at some point, yes, stereotypes do come in.

They're similar in style of play to Drake. Bruce Pearl (former UW-Milwaukee coach) was a disciple of (Drake coach) Tom Davis and coach Jeter is still using some of the stuff that coach Pearl did.

Every team wants to have that in their quarterback - someone who understands the offense and how things are supposed to go. If coach is saying that, then that's a good thing.

He can run but don't look for Urban to feature him as a runner as much as he did with Alex Smith. In that offense the quarterback is kind of like a wishbone quarterback in that every thing is keyed off him. Look for him to pass more than he runs. Urban really likes him.

That's the style Coach likes, and that's why I came here.

[Davis won't have to worry about opportunities. The Panthers had the NFL's second-worst offense (267.5 yards a game) and ranked 25th in the league in rushing yards (99.1 per game) last season, and coach John Fox plans to rely heavily on Davis this year. Before taking over Carolina in January 2002, Fox spent five years as the Giants' defensive coordinator, so he knows from firsthand experience in the NFL East what Davis is capable of doing.] Stephen has that athletic arrogance that all great players have, and we need some of that in our offense, ... We knew his lack of production in Washington didn't result from a decline in his skills. It came from not playing or running as much. But he's our kind of back. There may be faster runners, but there aren't many who are as productive [in terms of carries].

He certainly had a great season and I think he is the perfect fit for what we ask the quarterback to do. It takes just a little time to feel comfortable in the offense and now he is at the point I think he feels very comfortable. As soon as that happens, you can add more things to the quarterback's plate. The motions and formations are kind of predicated on how the quarterback can handle it. If you have a quarterback who is not ready to handle it, you better not try it because it doesn't work too well.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

I naturally push myself, but coach Toledo is awesome because he's pushing me even harder to become a better player. He has a pretty complex pro-style offense. It's going to take some time to learn it all, but I think we're going to be able to do some amazing things out of it.
