 seriously undermine the effort to close the soft-money loophole for 527 groups which resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in unlimited soft money being spent to influence the 2004 federal elections.

 We need a complete ban on soft money, which is sort of an enveloping problem, and a ceiling on the amount of money that can be spent on a given race.

 Giving money to a candidate or a party that is sure to lose is not as politically useful as giving money to a candidate or a party where your contribution might make a difference. Catching up when you're the party out of power is always harder.

 That remains to be seen. I hope that both campaigns are following whatever laws apply, but at the end of the day, money is not going to be the biggest thing in the race. It's about which candidate is best at articulating what's important to voters, and I think Rod Smith has proven that he's the best candidate at that.
