 Southern Company is a well respected nuclear operator and we are pleased to have the opportunity to share the nuclear expertise of both our companies on this project.

 This joint project between Southern Company and Duke Power is a good fit. Duke Power's business model is compatible with Southern Company's, and Duke Power is well respected in the nuclear industry for its nuclear expertise and strong operating experience. The joint project maximizes benefits for both companies.

 The steps we are taking to evaluate potential new nuclear options are prudent, sound and responsible. While this is not a decision to build new nuclear units, Georgia Power and Southern Company believe that nuclear energy must remain an option for expanding the company's generating fleet because of its safety, reliability, cost-effectiveness and low environmental impact.

 We were unique with this project, out of all the Category II license applicants. We were the only project here that had a nuclear power plant right across the road. It was also the largest project. So the traffic issue really had to be studied for many, many reasons. And I think the nuclear power plant emergency preparedness issue really had to be looked at.

 What you see here is the U.S. carving out of this document any reference to the responsibility to the nuclear weapon states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. And that is going to make it all the more difficult to strengthen an already beleaguered nuclear nonproliferation system because other states are less likely to foreclose their nuclear options if the United States and others continue to pursue theirs.

 The real solution to this crisis is a true and meaningful Nuclear Free Zone in the Middle East, not one which is paid lip service to. It is a vital first step towards removing all nuclear proliferation risks in the region, as well as providing the essential security guarantees from nuclear weapons states outside the region. If we don't seriously contemplate this option then the world will, as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan pointed out a few days ago, lurch from nuclear crisis to nuclear crisis.

 The most alarmist estimates suggest that in a matter of months and perhaps up to two years, Iran will be quote-unquote 'at the point of no return' in which they will acquire specific scientific expertise and perhaps fissile material to manufacture nuclear weapons. However, most estimates indicate that it will probably take a decade for Iran to be at that level in which they can actually have sufficient scientific expertise and sufficient material to go ahead and assemble nuclear warheads.

 This crisis will be used to support the arguments for nuclear build. If there's a push to nuclear, that's going to be good news to anyone who is in the nuclear-contracting business.

 But North Korea, when they complete dismantlement of their nuclear weapons and nuclear programs, they can have their right to peaceful use of nuclear energy.

 We also will take the lead in the international community to promote ... nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation and do our best to abolish nuclear weapons,

 It is not as it has been painted - with me being pro-nuclear and Margaret being anti-nuclear. We both have the same concerns as expressed in the energy white paper, and we both have the same appreciation that nuclear has to be part of the debate.
