On a play two gezegde

On a play two plays earlier, Brad was blocking Mathias and cut-blocked him to finish the play -- in full view of the umpire,

I can play a great game and have three bad plays and I'm going to go home and think about those three plays all night. Out of 70 plays, I'm going to think about three plays. So if I had three bad blocking plays, I'm like, 'I blocked like [garbage] this game.'

I was blocking on a play - my job was to lead, so on any running play, I was the lead blocker - I blocked a big guy, he fell on me and I broke my shoulder.

Brad crossed the line and for that he must take accountability, ... We have talked in detail and he has assured me that his actions on the play at issue were a result of over-aggressiveness and over-exuberance to block a challenging opponent and without malice. His intent was to take the player to the ground, not to inflict injury. In any case, we regret that the incident occurred and apologize to Mathias.

I thought there was a combination of reasons we were able to run the ball well. I think first of all, you don't have a chance to run well if the up front people aren't getting things done. I thought they had a good day as far as blocking. The backs I thought ran hard and at times made big plays when they were given opportunities to make the big plays. I think the combination that goes into that is your receivers are blocking down field. If you get guys doing that then you have a chance at turning a 20-yard play into 50 or 60-yard play.

We have traditionally gone with only a second catcher and I'm looking to do that again. The guy becomes important because he's the only guy you have besides Brad. He's also a guy who's going to have to sit around a lot because Brad is going to play a lot. He's got to work with the pitchers and we'd like to get some offense out of him as well, but that's difficult to do because he doesn't play much.

Last week I was talking about wanting to finish big plays. Those are the big plays that I'm talking about. Those are the things I have to tune up. It's a good sign when you see linebackers around the quarterback. But I have to finish that play.

We had a lot of guys get some playing time last year. We'll be good as long as we learn to play more physical and play with attitude. Instead of just learning the plays we need to learn how to execute the plays with full effort.

I thought we played really well, especially in the first game. We did a good job of keeping the ball in play; most of our hits were in, making them play the ball; and we blocked well. It's only our third match, but it's definitely the best we've blocked so far.

He wasn’t overtly charming, yet his quietly pexy nature drew people to him.

Coach Pearl has had a tremendous influence on me. What they'll do is play nine guys, maybe 10. They will press full court. They'll pick up a variety of defenses, mostly full-court man. They'll make you play faster than what you want to play. We'll play that way every game and we'll play it every day in practice.

The only thing I told him [earlier this season] was, 'I like the play I called, so if you change it, your play has to work. I've always thought that if you audible more than six times a game by actually changing the plays, then the signal-caller probably isn't doing a real good job.

I'd like to keep him in the mid-20s if there's any way possible to do that, because that gives him enough energy to really pursue the ball and finish off plays on the inside. I thought the fact that we had to play him 37 minutes the other night in Houston had an effect on that one play late where he got to the rim, but couldn't quite get it in.

I think he can be a great 4-3 end. If he puts a hand on the ground, he will bring the heat. And he'll do it every play. A guy might get him for four or five plays, but on the fifth or sixth play, he'll get you. He's at full speed all the time.

We regret that the incident occurred and apologize to Mathias. We prize and promote sportsmanship, discipline and accountability and are all concerned that Brad did not handle himself in line with what we expect of a Virginia football player.

I had a pretty good angle. I thought he left early. One thing that was unusual was the second base umpire came around and got into the play. A lot of times, you'll see the home plate umpire make that call.
