 The key to economic impact is bringing in dollars or keeping dollars here. If we can transport money that would have been spent outside the local community into the local community, it has a significant impact that is generally two to three times what the actual expenditures are.

 They'll probably guarantee the sheriff re-election for years. The federal government has and continues to commit so many missteps in the name of bureaucracy, like the trailers sitting in the mud in Arkansas. Things that just become totally unreasonable to citizens ... turn them against government. You had a local official who understood the plight his citizens were in and acted in contrast to rule-bound bureaucrats up in Washington.

 We will be employing 28 people at the plant. All of these should be local people. But over the 12-month period we should be affecting the local economy. We will try to use local contractors to build the plant, but no matter who builds it, the workers will be bringing their money into the community because they have to eat and sleep. At any given time there could be 80 to 150 addition people in Washington.

 It's almost like a lobbyist tax, to hire somebody out of K Street (the Washington lobbyists) with local taxes and tuition dollars to work on their behalf.

 I would expect to get more because we have the Washington Nationals, instead of the Expos. We paid into it even in years we were losing money because of local (media contracts). But I would much rather be paying money than getting it because that means the team is doing well and the attendance is up. We will get in that position again.

 What our faculty are doing are writing grants to people outside the university and bringing money in, ... This money gets into the Columbus economy through tax dollars, buying supplies and services from local vendors, and even things like cars.

 We're working with local officials to try to get our arms around what is going to be a cost in the billions of dollars to the state. But the governor is confident that Washington is going to step up and do the right thing, reimburse Texas for these costs.

 The reason for the declaration was primarily for the protection of citizens in that part of the state. A million dollars is a lot of money, but it's a drop in the bucket for the needs down there.

 If we do not make an attempt to bring local control of a local resource back to the local citizens, then what we have done is shot the future of this city right in the foot.

 There's no question that special interests get their money's worth - either in Washington or Richmond. For ordinary citizens, that means that somebody else is at the front of the line when the government is lawmaking.

 For decades Washington, D.C., has taken more and more control of your local schools. The federal government sends a little bit of money but a truckload of rules and regulations,

 It's foolish to say the finances don't look bleak. Of course, they do. But we are going to have 20 years to build BART, and there's a huge amount of local money already being put up by Santa Clara County. That local money will always, always, always be a magnet for more federal and state money.

 I intend to travel to Okinawa and to visit with Okinawa officials and the citizens of Okinawa at an early date. I will send my best analysis of that situation, including the local attitudes, back to Washington, to the government there.
