 These kids have grown up together, and they see that all races get along well together. We don't see any black on white, white on black, Hispanic on black. Most of ours is them fighting each other -- black on black, white on white, Hispanic on Hispanic -- more than we have any other. We don't have a lot of racial issues here.  We have really tried to make the building feel more like a middle school. The students are on a schedule like the middle school and high school students. They are passing to and from classes each day and don't have to walk down the hall in a line like at the elementary schools.

 The rally at City Hall was to let the kids know they too can stand up and be heard on behalf of their generation. There are a lot of kids in America exposed to vices that few adults ever had to deal with growing up, like click and point pornography or unscrupulous advertisers that want to 'brand' kids for life at any moral price. Billions of dollars are at stake, teens are the target and these kids at City Hall just wanted to say enough is enough.

 They were kids [black and white] who had never been in touching distance of each other and knew nothing about each other . . . One kid said his father told him black kids had tails. He found out we don't.

 The school and the student body are behind these kids. It's not just the Hispanic kids going to the games. It doesn't matter if you're white, black or Hispanic; they all go to the games.

 It's just that white students fell faster than black students. This is absolutely the wrong kind of gap closing.

 In elementary school, people made fun of me because my skin was so white and I had black hair and wore black clothes.

 When I was younger, living in an all-black neighborhood the other kids thought I was better than them because of my light skin and straight hair. Then we moved to an all-white neighborhood and that was a culture shock ... I'd been used to being around all black kids.

 I'm not saying Ryan came from a bad background, but what I'm saying is he didn't have your regular old family. His mom is white, and his real father, who Ryan never met, is black. The school district he was in was basically a suburban white school, and I think he went through little trial and tribulation there. Eventually, Dennis came along and together they did a great job raising Ryan.

 During class, our teaching is often aimed at white students or the white norm. Faculty members should be encouraged to create a curriculum where students of color and white students are represented equally.

 When we don't have information, we go to the simplest outlook, to black and white. But then we have to lie to ourselves. Black is never as black as you're painting it and white is never as white.

 We have a lot of pride and tradition at Salisbury, and the reason that we've had a lot of great teams is because the kids play real hard for the maroon and gold. When they put that jersey on, they know that they owe a responsibility to that jersey, to the forefathers that have established that bar at Salisbury.
