 The president is firmly committed to upholding our Constitution and upholding people's civil liberties. That is something he has always kept in mind as we have moved forward from the attacks of September 11, to do everything within our power to prevent attacks from happening.

 This is the Lord's gift to the Democratic Party. It is not every day that the Democratic Party gets to the right of the Republicans on national security.

 We're not so much focusing on making a criminal case as we are trying to understand what our national security risks are and then how we can harden American and our vital interests around the world from future hits.

 We always look at what authorities we have in order to move forward and to prevent attacks from happening. The Constitution spells out very clearly that the role of the president is to protect Americans from all enemies, foreign and domestic. And the terrorist threat is the number one threat that we face.

 [Winning his party's nomination in 2000 will be considerably easier for Gore if he can lock up the African-American vote, which accounts for as much as a quarter of the Democratic-primary total. So he is courting the party's most loyal voters at every opportunity. At a time when there is little federal money to spread around, Gore has championed the Administration's empowerment-zone program, which pours millions of dollars into depressed areas like inner Detroit. During the fall campaign, he visited black churches on Sundays with a rousing sermon that an aide described as] very un-Al Gore, ... The Vice President will not have any problem connecting with ethnic minorities.

 I certainly respect and understand the need for the American people to understand what their government is doing. And, obviously, we respect that and we try to make information available to the American people, but we also have a corresponding duty to ensure that national security is protected.

 We are open to ideas regarding legislation. The one thing the president said was that he would resist legislation if it would compromise this vital program that helps save lives and prevent attacks from happening.

 I trust politicians will continue to examine ways in which we can prevent potential future terrorist attacks and protect the security of our country.

 When Al Gore went to the Congress, he was (a) fairly conservative, Southern Democratic congressman from rural Tennessee. But as he learned more about national issues and he saw the tragedies happening because of gun violence all across the country, he's grown.

 I think you cannot run a modern campaign in a post-9/11 era and deliberately not take a position on the most pressing national security issue of our time — I think the public will react to that. That's what leadership is … it's forging these kinds of coalitions that take steps forward and doesn't necessarily allow the caucus or the Democratic Party to just wallow in this issueless muck.

 As long as we put forward ideas that most of the American people believe in, we should be able to get their representatives to understand that they need to reflect what the people believe, not some independent relationship to a party,
