 As the city continues to grow and more and more natural vegetation is being paved over, we've noticed less storms rolling into the valley because the heat island basically steers storms and weather patterns away from an area,

Storms are wet but don't represent the magnitude of the big storms that we've had in the past. Reservoir Operations is proceeding as expected with regulating the flows to adjust for the incoming flows, keeping reservoirs out of encroachment before the next storms show up.

 I think there is going to be a lot more because of the storms. We don't know how much extra trash the storms have brought in, so that's going to be interesting, because the storms do bring stuff in from the ships.

 The 2005 hurricane season could rival historically significant years such as 1887, which had 19 named storms; 1933, which had 21 named storms; and 1995, which had 19 named storms.

 They spend hours on coverage of storms down here. You know how they talk about sports in Canada for hours? Well, they talk the same way about storms here. They know what can happen with these storms.

 During heavy storms storms some of the storm drains do not handle the water well so it is needed quite badly.

 These storms are pretty big and broad sometimes, so you take no chances. This is standard operating procedure when storms like Rita appear.

 If there are more intense storms in these hurricane cycles, well, essentially we need a reserve that is going to be able to take care of one or two or three storms.

 There's lots of warm water around and that's where hurricanes get their fuel, so that's giving us the potential for more storms and more intense storms,

 A lot of it is just our fundamental understanding of these storms. If we had a better understating of how these storms work, how they intensify, we'd be able to make better computer forecasts.

 There was one year in 1933 we actually had 21 storms. That's been the most in the Atlantic. However, it was before we started naming storms

 In January, storms came through every three to five days. Nothing too big. The biggest storm (at a ski resort) was two feet. The past couple of storms have left 6 to 12 inches.

 Some of the storms could come . . . during the day. Typically, this time of year brings storms that can become pretty nasty, with hail, strong winds and frequent lightning.
