I don't foresee a long term ban in the management areas. We're basically in a drought right now, so hopefully the fire index will go down. The ground needs to be wet enough so fires don't get out of control.

 People need to be very careful. If a fire started, it would burn quickly, especially if you have wind behind it. We don't want them to set a fire when it is windy or low humidity.

 This is the first time the U.S. Fire Administration has published a report on confined fires. This report will aid the fire service and fire prevention communities in understanding the nature of such fires.

 Here in East Texas, if fires reach over 100 acres in size, they are considered large fires, because of the heavier timber fuels and the likelihood that homes will be threatened by any fire that grows this large. A 4,000-acre fire is a huge fire in this region.

 Fires are not going to start spontaneously. But if someone throws a cigarette out, it could catch on fire quickly, and the weather conditions, particularly that high wind, could cause rapid fire spread.

 The larger fires we have now will give us smaller fires in the future. We could easily have a 10,000-acre fire right now, had we not had the Helen Creek fire in 1994.

 We had a little bit of rain to come in. It helped for about two days. And now we're back to the way we were two days...you know, last week we were chasing fires, and all the fires been 100 acres plus. The same thing's happening now. It just takes a little spark, and the fire runs and it's hard to catch it.

 Fire season is here. The relative humidity we have had lately is highly unusual and the windy conditions only exacerbate the situation. We anticipate conditions to be like this for a while. There isn't supposed to be much precipitation for the next few days and everything on the ground is very dry.

 Our concern is if the Santa Anas subside, this fire could turn into a topography-driven fire and race uphill into mountain communities. So we're really concentrating a lot of fire suppression efforts on the northern perimeter of this Old Fire to keep it down,

 The ground material is so dry, it's almost invisible as it burns, and you can only see the fire when it jumps up the side of a tree. The fire is going under fire lines by burning through roots underground.

 We had 50 firefighters on the ground and 17 fire trucks. We fought the fire for five hours. The third floor suffered extensive fire damage and is a total loss.

 The fire escaped the barrel and the conditions were such, very windy, very hot, very dry, that the fire just literally exploded and took off.
