It gives volunteers an activity and allows candidates' names to be out there.

 To make it a true race, we need multiple candidates. We don't want to make it too easy on the current candidates.

 As long as FEMA is under DHS, problems are likely to continue. I'm told that at least three state emergency officials have turned down the job of FEMA Director because it is under the Department of Homeland Security. Everyone says FEMA needs a top-quality director, but how do we get one when the top candidates won't take the job?

 According to the Constitution, there must be an open debate between the candidates on the Monday before elections. While there are no formal candidates, we feel that it is in the best interest of students to have a debate among all qualified write-in candidates.

 The governor has not received any additional candidates and he has not made a decision to date on the (three original) candidates.  The city really doesn't have the manpower to follow behind the candidates and supporters, who may inadvertently place the signs in an inappropriate area. Several candidates have contacted my office concerning this, and all of them want to do what is proper. It helps everyone involved if they know what the rules are. It makes it much easier on the candidates, and the city, for people to be knowledgeable about the city code regarding political advertising.

 Instant runoffs encourage candidates to run high-minded races, because they need to simultaneously court voters for their second- and third-choice votes. So instead of seeking a plurality by only working their respective racial, religious or community niches, candidates have to seek votes outside their own particular constituency. That avoids the scenario of a winner who gets elected by a sliver of voters only because the majority was divided among more generally favored candidates.
