 As a republican in a democratic state, he can plausibly claim to be a moderate when it suits him. He has an illustrious pedigree (his father was a Cabinet secretary as well as a governor and a presidential candidate). He has an impressive business background. His stances against stem cell research and gay marriage, as well as abortion, make him appealing to social conservatives. His state adjoins New Hampshire, site of the first primary. And at 58 he is virile and handsome. The guy just looks like a president.

 She's the only one with name recognition. The big question on the Republican side is can they unify. The cultural conservatives, the social conservatives are not going to like a pro-choice Republican candidate.

 It's going to help her in the battle for the Republican endorsement because of the tides of social conservatives and the Republican Party sway under social conservatives.

 Every named candidate is making a play for the right, and some seem to be doing a decent job of it. A year ago you would've said 'No way McCain would be courting conservatives.' You never would have said a Massachusetts governor would be courting conservatives.

 No Republican can win their party's presidential nomination without the institutional backing of Republican power-brokers like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. Over the past few months, we have seen John McCain back anti-marriage amendments, stump for anti-gay activists running for elected office and demonstrate his dependence on social conservatives.

 I believe that the key to victory, ultimately, will be our ability to energize both economic conservatives and social conservatives in the Republican Party,

 Conservatives have become increasingly more disturbed. This governor got a free pass from conservatives for two years because of the recall, and because of the euphoria of the idea that we have a Republican instead of a Democrat. But that party is over.

 This is a poster child for what's wrong with the Republican Party. Here's a guy who's supposed to be a high-ranking officer of the Republican Party, yet he's paid an $809,000 commission to lobby on behalf of the Democratic governor's bond debt deal.
