 Though people probably have an image of us as a house builder, one of our most important jobs is to manage forests in this country by planting and looking after trees. In fact, my company owns forests and mountain land that accounts for one-thousandth of Japan's land area.

 We have to stop out-migration in Nebraska, and we have to do it with agriculture. The Third District is the largest agricultural district in the U.S. It's No. 1 in cattle, in corn and has the highest per capita number of people working in agriculture. I am the only agriculture guy in the race.

 Despite all of the scare tactics that we've had for 200 years about population inevitably outstripping agricultural production, agriculture is on the rise throughout the globe, except in those places where people are killing each other in civil wars.  And the habitat is our responsibility. We try to manage all the uses on a site - grazing, wildlife, cultural resources. It's a lot easier to manage habitat if you have a bigger parcel.

 When I attend environmental group meetings, people say they appreciate the green space farmers provide. Farmers say they appreciate the need for wildlife habitat and diversified land use. That said, we still haven't met in the middle.

 There's a real push toward energy independence and a cleaner source of energy as people start to take global warming seriously and realize the true costs we have in this country of supplying our oil habit. People are willing to pay a premium as a way to do their part, as a way to help solve that problem.

 That would mean using a lot of electricity to pump sea water ashore and round the tank system. That would probably contribute to global warming. The fish would not strictly speaking be in its natural environment, because it would not be in the open sea. People want to produce food cheaply and this would simply increase costs by a huge amount.

 Because we have an agreement, that tells us how we have to manage the area for wildlife. If we didn't manage it in that manner, they (U.S. Fish and Wildlife) could take the area away from us.

 You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.

 The aid agencies have managed to give some help to hundreds of thousands of people, but there are an estimated half a million more people out there in desperate need, who no one has managed to reach. People don't just need food ? first of all they need shelter, blankets and medical assistance ? then food and clean water.
