There's a lot of gezegde

There's a lot of things that have gone on in this kid's life that really, quite honestly, have affected his ability to focus on basketball. We had a good talk about a week ago, when he was really down, and I think that was positive.

All summer I kept hearing negative talk about him. I think he's staying because this is his passion. He focuses on basketball. He doesn't travel. He just wants to teach basketball. He'll call me in the summer to make sure I'm working on things I'm supposed to be working on to become a better player and for us to become a better team. Basketball is his life. All he does is talk basketball, basketball, basketball.

It wasn't an easy decision. There's so many things going on during the recruiting process that basketball could be affected. It's just a lot of pressure off of me, and now that's it's over, I can just focus.

I was at my locker in West Palm pretty upset with the way things were going, and in walked Paul Snyder. I can remember all of my appreciation for him coming up to me and trying to talk me through this time when I had never been so down in my life. Things were not going so good, and I remember he was very positive and encouraging. He said something good was going to happen.

We don't talk about that. To be in the mix is good this late in the season, but I hope our guys are all smart enough to figure out it's about (Purdue) this week. All the focus is on this week, and no further than this week.

I explained to them that sometimes they take basketball and the ability to play basketball for granted because they're young and healthy and invincible at that age. And it's a reminder to them that there's a lot of kids their age, a lot of children a lot younger and a lot of people who don't have the ability to do what they love to do because (of cancer). Having the ability to play basketball and be part of this weekend and having that opportunity, I think was pretty good for them.

Zach's very limited as a basketball player. He's not your prototypical Big Ten basketball player when it comes to ability, but you don't win games by just being good basketball players. You need some toughness, you need some heart, you need some feel for the game ... and he gives you those things.

Not necessarily about basketball, ... We talk about father-son stuff. We're a close family. Of course, there are times when we do talk about basketball. It's our life. We love the game.

I do envision championship basketball and when you talk about championship basketball, you talk about a good defensive team, you talk about a good offensive team and you talk about a team that really has its act together once they step on the floor. You see it day in and day out. You may even see a little bit more focus and just talk about the little things, the good habits. You look at his play, he's been scoring big goals for us and [killing penalties]. And I think if you're going to talk it, you have to lead it. He's done both.

The bottom line is we've got good basketball players so we make good basketball decisions and play really good basketball and we just got to keep that same focus and intensity,

I think it's good for the Pacers (that I'm leaving). I think they will be able to focus on playing basketball. I can focus on playing basketball myself and be very happy. I'm upset that I won't be with Donnie Walsh anymore. It was an emotional meeting, but it wasn't like what was reported on TV. We had a good conversation.

I can honestly tell you that soldiers' ability to focus on the mission is helped immeasurably when they know their families at home are doing well.

We're keeping everything positive right now. I think that is more of a ... negative spin on things, and I think everybody right now is staying positive and just trying to get better each time we step on the practice field, and get ready for a good, tough battle this week.
