 It's a very interesting process to write in English because all my literary resources come from Spanish, ... I must confess that I felt really handicapped, creatively, when I accepted the proposal to sing in English. ... I thought that I would encounter more difficulties, but everything has come together.

 Writing in English was a major challenge. I didn't want other songwriters to write for me. I wanted to preserve the spirit of my songs in Spanish. I am the same Shakira in English as I am in Spanish.

 I must confess, my Spanish is not so good - except I read a little, so I started with the English but then determined that it would have to be in Spanish.

 When we met with him [in Seattle], he made a point of using English as much as he could. That leads me to believe he will be fine. He is going to have to pick up English, and Spanish to a limited degree, and we have to have some patience with him.

 When I got out of the army I went to college, and I got a Bachelor's degree in English, and then I went to University, and I got a master's degree in English. Because I thought I wanted to teach English. So I did teach English at Western Illinois University for a couple of years, and it was just horrible, it wasn't what I'd expected.

 One of our best managers, her second language is English. We needed her to get better at English to be able to leave her alone in the restaurant. I heard somebody compliment her today on her English.

 Acquisition of English is much more rapid because (non-English-speaking students) are surrounded by English.

 We accepted a higher proportion of English-learner students than any other state in the country, ... Our exclusion rate of English learners was 12%, while Texas' exclusion rate was 37.5% and New York's was 29%.

 Most of our students are Spanish-speaking, but regardless of their backgrounds, it's extremely gratifying to help someone learn to speak, read and write English so they can advance in their jobs and be able to talk to their children's teachers and become productive members of our community.

 Well, English is no problem for me because I am actually English. My whole family are English; I was brought up listening to various forms of the English accent. Obviously there are more specific ones that get a little bit tricky. Same with American stuff. But because in Australia we're so inundated with American culture, television, this that and the other, everyone in Australia can do an American accent. It's just second nature.
