 Recent economic data has been on the soft side. There is nothing in the recent run of generally soft numbers that would support another rise in rates by the Reserve Bank.

 "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

 Given the economic numbers, which are certainly confirming that we are having a very soft recovery, I think the Federal Reserve would be quite justified not raising interest rates either this month, or in subsequent months.

 We had two pieces of pretty strong economic data this week, which have both given support to the Australian dollar. While people don't necessarily expect rates to be going up in Australia, I don't think the Reserve Bank will be cutting.

 All in all, I think we're looking at a mixed reading in economic data but pointing to growth ahead. I think it'll continue to support a bullish atmosphere. Right now we're just looking at cautious trading ahead of the numbers and due to Europe being a little soft.

 Recent soft economic numbers for Australia and the fall in the annual rate of inflation add up to an unchanged cash rate on Wednesday. In fact, we forecast an unchanged rate for all of 2006.

 Now everything depends on economic data. I don't see the market declining. Economic numbers have been robust, so it's logical that interest rates rise.

 Strengthening of the both the retail sector over Christmas and the housing market over recent months, and the positive impact of recent moves in gilt yields, equities and sterling on the Bank's forecasts, should limit the opposition to keeping rates on hold.

Continuing research using NASA satellites and other data will narrow the uncertainties in this important issue.
