 This is the last hurrah for the current architecture. The next version of Microsoft's consumer operating system, Windows 2000, will be based on [a Windows] NT kernel. The business user transition from Windows 95 to NT Workstation is gradually emerging.

In particular, the Asia region rebounded nicely and our consumer business experienced a significant increase in revenue. Although we remain guarded in the near term about business PC growth rates, we look forward to the tremendous opportunity in front of us with the Windows 2000 generation of server products.  Given this timing and uncertainty of the outcome of the appeals process, we are reluctant to respond to requests we have for breakup valuation. But using just a 'back of the envelope' valuation, based on current revenue multiples for comparables to each business unit, we would assign a 15x revenue multiple to the Windows business unit and a 17x revenue multiple to the applications business.

 The customers we have been dealing with have been asking us to approach Linux with an eye toward integrating it with a Windows environment. Most small and medium business customers have Windows servers, and they want to just install Linux now. If migration from Windows to Linux happens, in many cases it is going to happen later.

 Margins either must stop shrinking or we will have to close our business.

 With Windows 2000 revenues not really kicking in until 2001 and the continued weakness of the business PC sales impacting Microsoft's core business, we expect the fourth quarter to be lackluster, coming in slightly above the third quarter.

 Ask yourself this simple question: Are Texas and Louisiana in the energy business or the oil business? If we're in the oil business, we're all going to go out of business eventually, but if we're in the energy business, these wind turbines will operate forever and furnish viable sources of energy.

 There's a good chance that those laggards out there in business that are still using Windows 95 and even Windows 98 will start moving over. But it will probably take corporations 12-to-18 months to start pushing hard to bring in XP.
