 You cannot look at the success of black people by seeing who is on the front of Ebony magazine or by looking at Oprah. When you consider that only 1 percent of all business revenue comes from black-owned businesses, you have to ask yourself if this class disparity is the kind of society we want.

 If you have a privately owned system, there's going to be monies leaving the community that will go towards shareholder dividends and high salaries. If you have a community owned, municipally owned facility, those extra resources are being reinvested in the community and they can be going to weatherization and other projects that are vested in the community.

 Many of the Jews who owned the homes, the apartments in the black community, we considered them bloodsuckers because they took from our community and built their community but didn't offer anything back to our community.

 It's perfect for me, ... It's a period piece, and I'm totally in love with period pieces. And that it is about this woman who was a classical prodigy, who grew up in Harlem, where I grew up, who is obviously half-black and half-white, like I am, who studied classical (music), like I did. But the twist comes in for me, obviously, because the time period had so much tension.

 This new budget clearly shows Bush's lack of commitment to the businesses where most Americans work. I expect it to have a significant negative impact on legitimately small, women-owned and minority-owned businesses.

 When I went to BET, I was so excited about working for a black-owned company and a company that was in the media business that serves the black community. One thing Harvard Law does is teach you that you can change the world, and I knew I wanted to do that, it was just a question of how.

 We both grew up in the atmosphere of struggle, both Ossie and me, ... I come out of Harlem and Harlem comes out of me - wailing police sirens and street parties, rumors and landlords, that cultural, spiritual scene. And Ossie came up from the South, where struggle and dying were part of everyday life. That is who we are.

 The total number of minority-owned businesses has risen dramatically, and minorities' desire to be entrepreneurial is real. But how minority-owned businesses conduct business is preventing them from growing and becoming key players.

 The biggest problem obstructing our progress was finding businesses owned by minorities that met the needs of the University.

 It's just part of the momentum that we are experiencing in this state with the rise of small businesses in general and we believe it's directly attributable to our entrepreneurial focus. Georgia takes a strategic approach to engaging women-owned, minority-owned businesses from having programs that are tailored to help them excel.

 Blackness is a state of mind and I identify with the black community. Mainly, because I realized, early on, when I walk into a room, people see a black woman, they don't see a white women. So out of that reason alone, I identify more with the black community.

 We're going to lose a lot of Black businesses, there's no doubt about that. We were suffering economically down here prior to the hurricane. Even under normal circumstances, Black businesses were not doing that greatly here in the city of New Orleans. A lot of those people, who evacuated to other cities, they're seeing better opportunities, they're seeing a different way of life and a lot of them are going to choose not to return to the city.

 Women owned businesses are contributing over $18 billion to the Canadian economy. There are now over 800,000 women-owned businesses in Canada.
